Looking Ahead

Happy New Year! We hope that your year is off to a great start! We have a lot in store for 2013 and would like to share with you what's ahead!

Update to the Plan
As many of you may know, we are now in the process of updating our original plan that was submitted to The California Endowment in April 2010. This process will involve several things: key stakeholder interviews, surveys, work group meetings, community forums and lots and lots of resident engagement. You can find all of the documents for the plan update on our website here: http://bhclongbeach.org/resources/

BHC Full Hub Meeting
Our next Full Hub Meeting will provide an opportunity for folks to come and learn about the work that has been to date for the plan update process. At this time, we will have several breakouts for the workgroups. We encourage you all to come out and provide final input that can be drafted into the plan at that time. Here are the details:

Wednesday, February 20, 2013
4:30pm - Dinner/ Light Refreshments
5:00pm - 7:00pm - Program
Location: TBA*

*please check our website for the most recent updates!

Launch of BHC Youth Committee Campaign
Every Student Matters
The BHC Long Beach Youth Committee has spent a lot of time laying the groundwork for their first campaign as a committee: Every Student Matters! They will be using their time at the retreat to plan their formal launch, which is following up from their soft launch in the fall of 2012!

Community Outreach
This year, we will also be doing much more outreach in the community. With the help of our interns and outreach workers, we will be going to neighborhood group meetings, PTA's and other groups in the community to spread the word about BHC Long Beach! If you'd like someone to come out to your meeting or group, let us know!

There are also a lot of exciting things happening around the office with little-big improvements:

New Water Filter
We're excited to say goodbye to plastic water bottles!

Community Resource Board
We've installed a new community resource board with lots of great publications, pamphlets and brochures from our partners.

BHC Long Beach Bike Racks
New bike racks installed in the sidewalk area in front of our office. A lot of us at the office are starting to use bikes more on a daily basis.

Lastly, we'd like to settle some unfinished business!

Newsletter Satisfaction Survey - We asked and you told us! We want to thank those of you that took a few minutes to fill out the survey! It really means a lot to us and we look forward to incorporating your feedback over the next several newsletters. If you think you missed your chance, think again!  We will be officially closing the survey by the end of this month. Please tell your friends, neighbor or office mate to give us their feedback on how we can make our emails that arrive in your inbox of best interest for you!

Database Accuracy - We'd hate to miss you just because we didn't have your correct information! Some of you have already responded (thank you!) but we'd like to hear from more of you! Help us maintain an accurate database of information so we can get you the information you need in the most efficient way possible!

Sign On & Join Us! Support AQMD'S Port Backstop Measure

The Ports Must Be Held Accountable:

Urge AQMD board members to include the Port Backstop Measure in its 2012 Air Quality Management Plan!

The Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are collectively one of the largest sources of harmful air pollution in Southern California. Although the Ports have made an effort to reduce pollution through their voluntary Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP), port pollution continues to pose a public health threat and our region still fails to meet critical federal air quality standards.  The ports are being asked to do their fair share and commit to pollution reductions so we can meet our goals for clean air.

The South Coast Air Quality Management District's (AQMD) 2012 Air Quality Management Plan (AQMP) charts a course for our region to reduce harmful pollution and comply with the federal standards.

AQMD staff members have proposed a two-step Port Backstop Measure to be included in the AQMP.

The first step of this rule is based off of the ports’ own voluntary CAAP goals. If either of the ports fails to meet their reduction goals, they would be required to develop and implement plans to make up the gap between expected and actual pollution reductions. The second step would only occur if it were later determined that additional region-wide reductions are needed--the AQMD would assess whether more port pollution reduction measures would be feasible and the ports would be required to implement plans for further reductions where feasible.

The AQMD board members adopted the 2012 Air Quality Management Plan in December but decided to delay their vote on the inclusion of the Port Backstop Measure to allow for more time to consider the rule and further discussion with the ports.  The AQMD board will revisit the issue on February 1st.

We need to show strong support for this important rule to protect public health and our environment.

WHAT YOU CAN DO:

  • SIGN ON to the attached comment letter in support of the Port Backstop Measure by replying to candice@ccair.org. (This is the same letter circulated by Morgan from NRDC earlier.)
  • JOIN US at the hearing and urge the board to adopt Port Backstop Measure (control measure IND-01) on February 1st at 9am. The hearing will be held at the AQMD, 21865 Copley Drive, Diamond Bar, CA 91765.

There will be a conference call for anyone interested in learning more about the measure and to coordinate comments in advance of the hearing. The call will be on Friday, January 25th from 1-2 pm. The conference number is (866) 451-9644 and passcode is 1018. Please rsvp for the call by replying to candice@ccair.org so that we can make sure to reserve enough spaces.

Leadership Opportunities

CNM Nonprofit Leadership Development Program Call for Nominations

CNM is looking for emerging leaders in the nonprofit sector in Southern California and we need your help to find them!

CNM is very pleased to launch the fourth cohort of our signature Nonprofit Leadership Development Program (NLDP) and I’m asking for your help in identifying promising participants - “number twos” who are seriously moving towards a future role as an Executive Director.  NLDP is an ambitious, demanding program over five busy months, and the results have been transformational for those graduates who have transitioned from managers to leaders while building a new group of professional peers and trusted allies and learning from a diverse faculty of future advisors.  Participants will learn how to manage up, understand their personal strengths, work with external stakeholders and practice newly acquired skills on a project inside their current organization with the support of our certified executive coaches.

Thanks to the generous support of American Express, Sempra Energy and Union Bank, CNM is able to make this opportunity affordable for those who are interested.

And thanks to you, in advance, for helping us identify our next cohort of outstanding nonprofit leaders.

Please take a moment to forward this information to those you think might be interested or send us their contact information and we will follow up.
  • Nominate an emerging leader working in a nonprofit organization or government agency in Southern California.  This could be a colleague in your agency, staff at a grantee organization, or someone you work with in the field.
  • Nominations may be sent to Brianna Freiheit at BFreiheit@CNMsocal.org.  Please include the name and contact information of your nominee(s).

Upon receiving your nomination, we will contact them directly, letting them know they would be a strong candidate for NLDP based on your recommendation and encourage them to apply for this exciting opportunity.

The next cohort begins in March and our application deadline for NLDP is fast approaching so please share your nominations with Brianna by Thursday, January 17, 2013

Thank you in advance for recommending exceptional nonprofit leaders whom you believe will benefit from, and contribute to, this unique opportunity.
