Our son Scott and his girlfriend Ali took some time over the holidays to learn how to paint a watercolor batik. We were lucky to have all three kids, our son-in-law, my mom and Ali with us to celebrate Christmas and the New Year - hope you had a wonderful holiday season with your loved ones.

Invited Back To Breckenridge     Watercolor Collage WorkshWorkshops for 2013

One of the workshops I had while in Breckenridge, CO was Watercolor Collage where we combined painting with applying tissue and rice papers for added texture. This was my demo painting and I tried to use analogous colors as I prepared my collage papers. You can see my Workshops for 2013 here

PROFUSION OF FLOWERS  11x15 Watercolor - $70
I painted this using one of my favorite approaches - wet the paper first, apply bright colors randomly all over and then when all is dry use negative painting to pull out shapes of flowers. It is always a surprise to see how it will turn out.
You can see this painting and many more in my Etsy Shop.

Save Whites With Contact Paper

I have a love hate relationship with masking fluid - on the one hand it is a great way to preserve the white of the paper, on the other hand you can end up with harsh, awkward edges. For this floral painting, I decided to cut out my three big flower shapes from contact paper and stick it on watercolor paper so that I could apply my background colors freely. When I removed the contact paper I had nice, clean flower shapes ready for paint.
