January 2013

Happy New Year!

Like most people, I make a list of resolutions every New Year—and this year is no different. In 2013, I hope to spend more time in the garden and in the studio, working on some personal projects. (Check out my Works In Progress page on my website to see ongoing projects.) I also hope to introduce more new classes throughout the year; stay tuned for details.

Wishing you and yours a wonderful New Year!

On Sunday, January 13 from 1:00-4:30 pm, I'll be teaching a new class at the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History—Painting with Decorative Papers. In this class, we'll experiment with painting and drawing on beautiful art papers (supplied as part of the class), using gouache and acrylic paints. For more information and to register for the class, click here.

Nature's Jewels at the Tilden Environmental Education Center
As a member of the California chapter of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators, I'll be participating in "Nature's Jewels," a group show of natural history-themed art at Berkeley's Tilden Environmental Education Center. I've got three giclee prints in the show, which runs from January 1–February 28, 2013. Contact me if you'd like more information about this art exhibition.

Ongoing Art Exhibitions
Giclee prints of my artwork can be seen in a couple of ongoing exhibitions. The first is at Lula's Chocolates in Carmel's Crossroads Shopping Center, where you can pick up a box of delicious salt caramels, almond toffee, Aloha rocky road and many other delectable treats.

I've also got artwork up at Chesebro Wines in Carmel Valley Village, as part of a group exhibition by local artists. Sample some lovely local wines (including Arroyo Seco pinot noir and Carmel Valley syrah) while perusing artwork from photographers, painters and printmakers.

Atolla jelly
INTERESTING STUFF

As I work with Sylvan Dell editor Donna German to put the final touches on artwork for
A Day in the Deep, I'm revisiting my research on the various animals in the book. One of my favorites has been the Atolla jelly (Atolla wyvillei). When threatened, this deep-sea jelly activates a "burglar alarm" system of bioluminescence—the idea being that a larger predator will come along and eat whatever is threatening the Atolla. To see the Atolla jelly in action, check out this video.
moth flowers
Featured listing on Etsy

An interest in pollination—specifically, night-blooming flowers that attract moths—inspired this painting. Sacred datura or jimsonweed

(the large flower on the left) is a common sight in the deserts of Southern California, and it's the subject of one of Georgia O'Keeffe's most famous paintings. A bit of research revealed a whole host of other pale, nighttime moth flowers; I chose several favorites for this painting. More information about moth-pollinated flowers can be found on the US Forest Service's excellent "Celebrating Wildflowers" site.
Matted, archival prints of the original acrylic painting are available through my Etsy site.
