Commonwealth Association of Museums (CAM) Bulletin No. 14

A Year of Change and Renewal at CAM

As we end 2012 and start 2013 in many societies around the world tradition affords us the opportunity celebrate past achievements and anticipate those to come.  The past year has seen major changes at both CAM and our major funder, the Commonwealth Foundation.  The Foundation has appointed a new director, Vijay Krishnarayan, and a new staff at their London HQ. After conducting exhaustive international consultations a new strategic plan was developed and published. One result which will affect CAM was the Foundation’s launch in November of a new direction for its one million British pounds grants program.

CAM itself organized a successful African workshop in Nigeria, renewed its Museum Studies Distance Learning Course and hosted two international student interns.  Several very significant organizational changes were also accomplished.  Rooksana Omar assumed active duties as our new president, replacing outgoing president, Martin Segger. But perhaps most significant for members, our long-serving secretary general, Lois Irvine, transitioned to retirement as her duties were assumed by our new SG, Catherine C. Cole.  We will miss Lois’ firm and experienced hand at the helm of CAM although she has promised to stay involved. As of January 1, 2013, CAM’s executive office has been moved to Edmonton, Alberta.

We now look forward to all the challenges of these changes as we anticipate, along with you our members, a “Happy New Year” and all the very best for 2013.

Lois Irvine Hangs Up Her Hat: An Open Letter to CAM Members

Dear CAM Members:

Over the past few months, we have been working towards a new phase for CAM. The Commonwealth Foundation has been reviewing their mandate and plans and has announced a new Strategic Plan. This plan will make a difference in the lives of our associations although we do not yet know exactly what it will mean in terms of funding.

At the same time, I have decided to retire from official CAM business and thus as Secretary General. Many of you will know I have been working on this for some time but am now able to do it. I certainly intend to keep in touch and to go to what CAM events and participate in CAM activities as the opportunities arise. I will be finishing up some things after Dec. 31 but mainly with interns, membership lists, and part of the Distance Learning Program.
The very good news is that after deliberation by the Board and discussions, Catherine Cole, whom quite a few of you know of and have met, will become Secretary General as of January 1, 2013. I know she will bring new energy and creativity to the position and we look forward to our 40th anniversary in 2014 and lots of good years after that.
Further information will be coming in the new year and we will also be updating the mailing lists.

Best wishes to you all for a happy holiday season and a wonderful year in 2013.

Lois Irvine

Zimbabwe Project: Report by Timothy Mason

Timothy Mason represents CAM on the Commonwealth Organizations Committee (COCZ) on Zimbabwe, which was established some four years ago to examine ways of engaging with this country in areas such as health, education and local government (and more recently culture) and to identify needs which may be met with the aid of organizations in commonwealth countries.

Together with Geoffrey Davis of the Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS) and the Zimbabwean actor Chipo Chung (Britain Zimbabwe Society), Tim visited Zimbabwe in May 2012. The trip, which was made possible by a special grant from the Commonwealth Foundation, was hectic, exhilarating and exhausting, but very well worthwhile.  For the complete report see: http://www.maltwood.uvic.ca/cam/activities/upcoming_conferences/index.html.
