Bahrain Assumes Leadership of RCREEE Board of Trustees for 2013
The Kingdom of Bahrain has taken over the presidency of the Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) Board of Trustees for the year 2013. His Excellency Sheikh Nawaf Bin Ibrahim Bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Chief Executive of the Bahraini Electricity and Water Authority has been named chairman of RCREEE’s Board of Trustees (BoT), succeeding Mr. Lakhdar Ben Maazouz, Director of Renewable Energy Department at the Algerian Ministry of Energy and Mines. RCREEE’s secretariat thanks Mr. Lakhdar Ben Maazouz for his support, leadership and outstanding efforts over the last year, and looks forward to working under the new leadership.

Egypt: NREA and Dii Collaborate on Renewable Projects
The Egyptian Authority for New & Renewable Energy (NREA) and the Desertec Industrial Initiative (Dii) signed a memorandum of understanding to increase collaboration supporting local renewable energy (RE) institutions and accelerate the dissemination of RE projects. Both parties have agreed to leverage information exchange regarding solar and wind resource analysis, incentive instruments for  RE private investments in Egypt and the MENA Region, creat long-term opportunities for RE electricity transfers from Egypt to the EU and support local mechanisms for RE projects in Egypt.

Algeria: Solar Energy in Oran International Airport
The General Directorate of West Airports institution announced the adoption of a plan aiming to integrate renewable energy technologies at Oran International Airport. The new airport will depend on solar energy as aprimary source of energy for lighting and cooling purposes. The project implementation will take about 3 years where each square meter of solar panels is expected to generate 50 kilo-watt of electricity.

Saudi Arabia: Makkah going green
Holy Makkah Municipality is preparing to implement "green city" project which make Makkah city fully dependent on solar energy for electricity generation. This comes within the Kingdom's direction towards finding alternative energy sources, says Deputy Assistant Secretary for Developing Municipal Investments. He assured that the project will save more that SR 2 billion in favor of the Saudi state treasury over the next 20 years.

US: Solar PV Energy Sells Cheaper than Coal Energy
The recent purchasing price of electricity generated by 50MW thin-film solar PV project in New Mexico, USA proves the competitiveness and attractiveness of grid connected solar energy. According to RenewableEnergyWorld.com the project records 5.79 US cents per kilowatt hour (kWh)-which is third the price of thin-film solar PV projects typically sell for (16.3 cents/kWh) and less than half of the average price for new coal plants 12.8 cents/kWh. It is worthy to mention that PPA prices were ranging from 8-14  US cents/kWh in 2012.
