"From Prosecution to Empowerment" Conference
Fighting Human Trafficking and Promoting the Rights of Migrants
What is human trafficking? How extensive is human trafficking? What are constructive ways of eradicating human trafficking?
While there is scarcely a more high profile social problem today than human trafficking, we actually know little about this issue. Despite claims in the media, there simply is not accurate count of forced labor or human trafficking. Even more problematic, some define and treat trafficking as a crime, while others conceptualize the issue as a social problem caused to structural inequalities. These competing definitions of trafficking continue to distort a pragmatic framework of this issue.
From Prosecution to Empowerment will engage in clarifying the term and scope of "human trafficking" and will feature scholars, advocates, and activists who have worked directly with vulnerable groups including domestic workers, farm workers and sex workers. Conference participants aim to develop empirically grounded solutions to trafficking, advocating for the empowerment and autonomy of vulnerable peoples and going beyond the one-size-fits-all model of rescue and prsecution advocated by the U.S. Department of State. The main goals of the conference are to situate the war on trafficking in the broader struggle for migrant human rights, o bring civic leaders from different sectors into conversation with scholars, social workers and activists, and to begin to develop policy recommendations.

What is Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals?
A new policy by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) allows certain young immigrants who do not have lawful immigration status, and who came to the United States as children, to remain in the U.S. temporarily without fear of deportation. This new policy is called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). The immigrants who can apply for deferred action under this policy are often called DREAMers.
Immigrants who are approved for DACA will not be deported and can get permission to legally work in the U.S. for two years, with possible renewal. To qualify for DACA, immigrants must have come to the U.S. before age 16, must have attended school in the U.S. or served in the military, and meet other eligibility requirements.

The David Geffen School of Medecine at UCLA is currently accepting applications for the following summer academic enrichments programs:

PREP is a seven week summer academic enrichment program that targets students from disadvantaged/underrepresented backgrounds. Students are exposed to the rigors of academic medicine and dentistry. Included are preceptor ships with physicians in clinical and research settings. The program is enhanced by students being mentored in intimate, structured cluster groups by trained teaching assistants; accomplished medical students. The program is free, however housing is not provided. As stipend is given to students for living expenses. The postmark deadline for submission of all required material is March 1, 2013. SMDEP is a six-week summer academic enrichment program that targets educationally and financially disadvantaged freshman and sophomore college students by providing intensive and personalized medical and dental school preparation. This national program is funded through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The program is free. Provided are on campus housing and some meals. Deadline for applying is March 1, 2013. The eleven-month program is conducted in two sessions, summer and academic year. The priority deadline for applying is May 7, 2013. Final deadline May 14, 2013.
