Asian Studies Opportunities

You can do more with Asian Studies this semester, from film series to scholarships to festivals. Check out these opportunities, and watch for more to come through the website and Facebook group (Alabama Students Interested in Asia). If you are interested in investigating an Asian Studies minor, contact the Director of Asian Studies at asianstudies@as.ua.edu.


Asian Studies Research Award

Submit your research project on Asia soon! Deadline for the scholarship and award is February 15. To submit, email all required material to asianstudies@as.ua.edu. All submissions must include a cover page with name, CWID, email address, and a 3-4 sentence summary of the paper or project. For creative projects that are not in a paper format, students should submit a 1-2 page description of the project and its academic basis along with appropriate documentation (e.g., photos, video, audio files). The Research Award and the Asian Studies Outstanding Student Award will both be presented in an Honors Week event in April.

International Opportunities

Want to study in Asia? Check out these opportunities! UA's Study Abroad trips include China and Japan this summer. You can also apply for scholarships and other programs, such as the Ambassador Summer Scholarship Program with the Taiwan US Alliance. Recent graduates (or soon to be graduates) can apply for internships such as the International Programs Fellowship at USAID (deadline February 25). Keep watching this newsletter and the Asian Studies website for additional opportunities.

The Immortal Life Across Cultures: A Documentary Series Exploring Women’s Agency and Civil Rights around the World


Explore global issues of gender, agency, civil rights and representation in this three-week series designed to inform our conversation about marginalized women's stories.Two of the films focus on women of Asian heritage. 

THURSDAY FEBRUARY 7
7pm, 205 Gorgas Library
Working Women of the World (France/US, Dir. Marie France Collard, 2002, 53 mins.)
This documentary engages with the stories of women in Indonesia, the Philippines, Turkey, Belgium and France who are responsible for the labor that fuels the circulation of global capital and free trade, but who are all too often unseen and exploited.
 
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 14
7pm, 205 Gorgas Library
In Search of Lin Zhao’s Soul (China/US, Dir. Hu Jie, 2004, 115 mins.)
During China’s chaotic Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), Lin Zhao spoke up for civil rights, and was imprisoned and eventually died for them. Director Hu Jie recovers her story, and in doing so brings to light forgotten stories from this tumultuous period and the difficulties in accessing them.
 
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 26
7pm, 205 Gorgas Library
Pink Saris (UK/India, Dir. Kim Longinotto, 2010, 96 mins.)
After being married off as a child bride, Sampat Pal has struggled for agency and respect in her family, and has extended her call for women’s rights to her broader community through creating the Pink Gang. This film follows Sampat in her role as a community mediator of everyday challenges faced by women in contemporary India.
