Good news from Capacity Building: We had a well qualified couple from Portugal that were struggling to get employment in Britain and continue to be in very poor housing. We decided on a targeted approach aimed at any Portuguese employers. The wife gained a position with a Portuguese Wine Company around £20k per year and the Husband is attending an Interview next week with a Shoe Distribution company importing from Portugal paying around £35-37k. Hopefully now they will improve on their home situation as well. Where is your “share price” strongest? Well done to the team
We continue our preparations for our Customer 1st assessment in February. Customer 1st will choose a group from our staff, volunteers and Board and interview them as part of the assessment. We will spend the remaining time we have on ensuring that we have all our policies and procedures in place and that we all are fully aware of the standards.
It's getting cold: local authorities have a duty to ensure that vulnerable people are protected and provided for during the winter cold season, when extreme cold temperatures for extended spells can threaten the safety and wellbeing of some people. One of our key concerns of course is rough sleepers and this week we are already referring a group of rough sleepers to what is called a SWEP project (Severe Weather Emergency Protocol) project in South London. Historically, SWEP provision has been triggered when the temperature has been forecast at zero degrees or below for three days. However, a common sense approach tends to prevail.
Singing and playing: Our Choir and music group are preparing for their next concert, agreeing the songs and the music that they will be practicing over the next few months. Everyone and anyone is invited to these free sessions, Music 11- 1pm Mondays and Choir 10.30 - 12.30 Tuesdays here at CHC
Welcome to Sabrina, our new volunteer who will be with us three days a week and will focus on our YES’s – Youth Engagement Scheme – sports, media and PRU – Pupil Referral Unit projects. Sabrina says she is keen to develop a girl’s hockey team for young people in Brent. Watch out Rio Olympics!
The PRU: Mark reports a successful project at Brent’s Pupil Referral Unit. Every Monday Mark offers support projects on topics such as bullying, empowerment, disability etc to PRU pupils as well as a music session in tandem with Dotan, our music teacher. Mark measures success via surveys from the pupils and so far the project is a very welcome input in the lives of these children.
Healthy eating: Shirley (our chef) reports a growing number of customers coming for lunch and customers with a range of dietary needs. Shirley is supported in the kitchen by work placements, trainees and volunteers.
And our first CHC wedding of the year! We wish Anne and her partner a very happy life together.
