Funding Opportunities for Coaches Guide 2013

Funding can make a huge difference to people wishing to coach in many different ways. From contributions towards course fees through to equipment hire, there are schemes and funding pots available in most circumstances.

Produced by sports coach UK in partnership with the England Coaching Network and SkillsActive, the Guide provides information on funding available in England to support coaching.

Protecting Playing Fields Funding Round 4 open

Communities across the country can start bidding for a share of £2 million of National Lottery investment to protect and improve their local sports playing fields.

The latest round of Sport England’s Protecting Playing Fields fund will help enhance local playing fields or create new sports pitches.

Overall, 163 projects have benefited from a total of £7.8million of investment from the three rounds of Protecting Playing Fields funding, with 504 pitches and nearly 1,900 acres protected and improved, and 57.4 acres of land purchased
  • Round 4 opened on 10 December 2012 and will close on 18 February 2013
  • Round 5 will open on 10 June 2013 and close on 5 August 2013.

Inspired Facilities ~ 2013 Funding Rounds

Inspired Facilities funding is focused on making it easier for local community and volunteer groups to improve and refurbish sports clubs or transform non-sporting venues into modern grassroots sport facilities. Sports Clubs and Groups can apply for £20,000 – £50,000.

Part of Places People Play, Sport England’s programme to deliver a London 2012 legacy of increased mass participation in sport, it is investing £50 million of National Lottery funding in up to 1000 community sports projects between 2011 and 2014.

Timescales
  • Round 4 will open on 4th March 2013 and clubs have until 29th April to submit their application.
  • Round 5 will open on 21st October 2013 and clubs have until 16th December to submit their application.

Go for it Scotland! Opens to Applications for 2013

Run by Quality Meat Scotland and sportscotland, the programme will offer 20 bursaries of £500 on an annual basis in the run up to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. The programme is open to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities living and training in Scotland who are taking part in healthy activities to increase their heart rate.

Grants are available for a wide range of purposes including equipment, specialist clothing, travel, training, nutrition or coaching.

Bursaries can also be used to set up a new group. One such group has been set up by Langfaulds Primary School in Glasgow, which used funding from Go for It Scotland! to establish a basketball club and take part in local basketball festivals.

Funding boost announced to encourage disabled people to take up sport

Sport England has announced it will invest £2m over the next two years to encourage sport as a lifestyle choice for disabled people.

The money will be given to the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) to provide expertise to sports organisations to help them motivate disabled people to take part.

Sports to be focused on include athletics, cycling, swimming, cricket, gymnastics, badminton, tennis, football, table tennis, equestrian, golf and volleyball.

Government initiative to encourage apprenticeships extended to 2014

A government-funded scheme that provides cash incentives for employers to take on apprentices has been extended following positive feedback from participants.

The Apprenticeship Grant for Employers of 16-24 year olds (AGE 16-24) pays some or all training costs and a £1,500 grant to employers who sign up.

Ministerial dispute holds up school sports announcement

A dispute between the health secretary, Jeremy Hunt, and the education secretary, Michael Gove, continues to delay the announcement of a new £100 million government school sport policy. The new strategy had been scheduled to be announced before Christmas to coincide with announcements on investing £492 million in grassroots sport and £347 million in elite Olympic sports ahead of the Rio Games in 2016.

Official report into school sports delayed

An official report looking into the current levels of school sport has been delayed by six months and has added further to the criticism of the government’s commitment to establishing an Olympic legacy.

Academy schoolchildren say they inspired to do more sport

It appears that the Olympic legacy is having an effect in some areas of school sport as recent figures from the United Learning group show that sixty per cent of academy schoolchildren are undertaking extra sporting activities as a result of the 2012 London Games.
