The Atlanta Rollergirls are kicking off their 9th season with a bang! 2012 proved to be a PIVOT-al year, and we’re keeping the momentum going with high expectations in 2013, and you know we’re gonna blast you out of your seats.

In home team action, the Demons, Sakes, Shocks & Stix are bringing the pain. The Denim Demons come into the season in the #1 spot, taking home a solid victory over the Sake Tuyas in last year’s championship game. Will they be able to hold onto that title this season? With each team taking on new rookies, along with a few roster changes, anything could happen. We know that each team is taking their athletic prowess to a higher level in 2013, and when somebody tells us we hit like girls, we say, “Thank you!”

In interleague action, the Dirty South Derby Girls are looking to hold on to their international ranking, even with some changes in the WFTDA rankings system. Atlanta derby fans came out in droves to cheer them on at the WFTDA Championships, and proved that Atlanta is a true derby town. Along with the Rumble Bs and Jukes of Hazzard, the Atlanta Rollergirls are taking the derby world by storm!

Where You Can Find Us

Deb Brawl

The draft is done, and each team has new rookies.

You can be the first to meet your new 2013 Apocalypstix, Denim Demons, Sake Tuyas and Toxic Shocks!

You’re invited to the 2013 Pre-Season Debutante Brawl, where we’ll be sashing our newest members and officially inducting them onto their new home team. Along with sashes, we can pretty much guarantee there’ll be ridiculous dresses and A LOT of dancing.

The ceremonies start at 7:30, and after that, we’re releasing our newest Rollergirls into the wild to dance it up. There’s no cover, and the party goes until the last person leaves. (In Rollergirl language, the last person to leave is the WINNER. Don’t be losers, you guys.)
See you there!

Rookie Expo

On January 26, 2013, Atlanta Rollergirls' newest rookies will prove their skills in a special expo bout at our practice space in Norcross.  This year's crop of rookies will flex their newly-drafted derby muscles against one another.  It's one of our favorite events of the year, and a great way to welcome our new skaters.  If you'd like to attend, ask your favorite rollergirl!

Scrimmage-A-Thon

Atlanta Rollergirls are hosting a Scrimmage-A-Thon, February 2nd, from 2-8pm. Skaters from all over the Southeast will join us for eight 30-minute scrimmages, including Rookie, All-Star and 6 themes to choose from. There's also a 2-hour workshop with Wild Cherri (South Central Tournament MVP Blocker!). Scrimmage and workshop are open to female skaters, 18+ with WFTFA insurance, who have been cleared to bout by their home league.  All scrimmages are full and the workshop is sold out, but if you'd like to attend the scrimmage-a-thon as a spectator, purchase tickets here.

Rec League

The Atlanta Rollergirls Rec League knocked it out of the park in their inaugural year.  They were voted the "Best Rec League" in the city by Creative Loafing's readers, a huge award for such a young league.  If you're interested in someday becoming a rollergirl, Rec League is a great place to start, with twice-weekly practices for all skill levels, and training time with some of the same folks who train the rollergirls themselves.  Get more information here.

Emory Sports Medicine

One of our sponsors, Emory Sports Medicine, would love to keep skaters and fans rolling and share helpful tips on staying injury-free.

Do You Have Shoulder Instability?

Shoulder instability is caused when the head of the upper arm bone is forced out of the shoulder socket. Because the shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in our bodies, it is also the joint that is most frequently dislocated.  Shoulder instability can develop in a variety of ways:

•Trauma or injury, including labral tears and/or dislocations of the shoulder joint.

•Repetitive motion injury, especially among athletes who would make the same overhead motions again and again, causing excessive wear and tear on the shoulder joint (as in baseball, tennis, swimming or volleyball

•Genetic factors, which can cause general looseness in the joint and surrounding ligaments, tendons, and muscles, especially when the shoulder is put under strain or stress.

One Whistle Jam Starts

In the past, jam starts were confusing. There were knee starts, no-pack starts, and on rare occasions, even the total absence of a start. It was difficult to understand, which made it great for guys like me, whose job it is to explain these things. Business was booming, and I was thinking about getting a diving board installed in my private bank vault so I could swim around in my gold coins Scrooge McDuck style, because is there anyone cooler than Scrooge McDuck? No. No there is not. Tried dressing in Scrooge's signature top hat/no pants style, but after a lengthy conversation with some friendly police officers, I stopped doing that in public, so the diving board seemed like the best place to go. Anyway, that's all moot now, because the new jam start rule is so simple that I'm practically out of a job. Check out how easy jam starts are now:

There's one whistle. Everyone goes, blockers and jammers alike. That's it. That's the whole rule. How am I supposed to write about that? I just... I don't have anything left to say...

Anyone want to buy a top hat?
