The paper explores the role of pioneer migrants in the development of migration systems and marks the conceptual advancement stemming from the THEMIS project – Theorizing the Evolution of European Migration Systems, bridging the links between migration studies, as an avenue for intellectual exploration, and broader currents of social theory.

It brought together researchers who have explored these issues theoretically and/or empirically to how migration can be conceptualised as a function of aspirations and capabilities to achieve theoretical progress.
