Ask the AD: Fran Reidy on the Changing DII Landscape

Fran Reidy became a full time member of the St. Leo Lions athletic department in 1993. Along the way, he has served as Sports Information Director, Compliance Officer, Assistant Athletic Director, and Associate Athletic Director until reaching his current role as Director of Athletics in 1999. Mr. Reidy was good enough to offer some thoughts on the evolution of DII athletics, as well as advice for new and hopeful ADs.

ANNOUNCEMENT - Winthrop Intelligence will host a “think tank” dialogue on revenue generation issues in intercollegiate athletics this summer at the NACDA conference in Orlando. The focus will be on creating discussion between senior athletic administrators and leading scholars who conduct industry-focused research in this area. Drs. Chad McEvoy from Syracuse University and Nels Popp from Illinois State University, along with other scholars, will sit down and exchange ideas with administrators and confer about key challenges in generating revenue for intercollegiate athletic programs. The goal of the “think tank” is to facilitate practical research to help solve the stated challenges. The event is for senior administrators, by invitation only, and will not be open to members of the media.

Inside the Contracts

Emeritus provisions within contracts and extensions seem to be increasingly common in college athletics, a way to keep a beloved coach involved in departmental operations and use their influence in the community for the good of the university. The following are a few notables:

After transition to Emeritus Status Coach will no longer be Head Coach. Duties and responsibilities as Emeritus will be assigned at the time of transition by the Director of Athletics. It is currently anticipated that Coach will be involved with duties such as public appearances and fund raising activities for the University and other matters as assigned. If Coach

Subsequent University Employment
 
Coach will be offered employment in the capacity of an assistant director with responsibilities to be assigned by the Athletic Director, which duties may include public relations, development, marketing and/or other areas as shall then be determined by the Athletic Director to be within the needs of the Department and the Coach’s demonstrated knowledge and experience.
