Action Calls
BC Budget 2013 - Inclusion BC response and media
The Minister of Finance announced the 2013 BC Budget on February 19. Inclusion BC Executive Director Faith Bodnar and political analyst and Inclusion BC supporter Michael Prince were in Victoria to respond to the budget and its impact on children and youth with special needs, adults with developmental disabilities and their families. CLBC's lack of funding to meet the demand of services was a hot topic in the legislature and the media. Visit our website to read more.

Resources and Information
Inclusion BC to Launch Ready, Willing and Able Campaign
Inclusion BC is excited to launch an exciting new campaign to expand the employment opportunities of people with developmental disabilities, with a focus on youth with special needs graduating from high school. Read more about the campaign here. Inclusion BC representatives recently presented the beginning stages of the campaign to our Ottawa Federation, who plan to use B.C. as a springboard to promote employment across the country. The Canadian Association for Community Living has been working at a national level with government to launch and promote the Ready, Willing and Able campaign.

Mandate of Representative for Children and Youth to Include Youth up to 24 yrs
A bill has been introduced in the Legislature to expand the mandate of the Representative for Children and Youth, Mary Ellen Turpel Lafond, to include youth up to the age of 24. This is great news for the 600 youth with special needs transitioning out of high school and into adult supports. Read the Times Colonist article here.

Report from the Representative for Children and Youth Shows how System Failed Young Boy with Special Needs
A report issued from the Representative for Children and Youth titled "Who Protected Him?" shows the results of an extensive investigation that chronicles the life of a young aboriginal boy with special needs who was tasered by police in 2011. The report includes strong recommendations against the use of seclusion and restraints as a form of controlling behaviour in residential care. This is timely and important, as Inclusion BC continues to hear from parents whose children have been injured while held in seclusion rooms at school. The report also recommended that the Ministry "create a comprehensive plan to develop a continuum of residential services for children and youth in B.C. with complex needs that cannot be met in traditional foster home or group home settings, and fully fund and support that plan to ensure that these vulnerable children have access to residential care to support their optimal development." Read the report here.
CACL responds to Verdict in Hawley Case
The Canadian Association for Community Living has responded to a recent Ontario conviction of manslaughter in the starvation death of Jamie Hawley, who died while in the neglectful care of his brother. "Jamie’s death calls urgent attention to the dangers of isolation and raises serious questions about the roles and responsibilities of individuals, communities and systems in protecting one another’s well-being," writes CACL. Read the press release here.
