What is Ojas?

Much has been written here about ama, the sludge that forms when food, experiences and emotions are incompletely digested. This material stresses our organs, tissues and bones instead of feeding them. Though ama stresses our body, there is a substance which nourishes us: when digestion, metabolism, absorption, and assimilation are perfect, ojas is formed.
 
Sap flows through a tree, nourishing and sustaining it. In much the same way ojas flows through us.
Ojas is the purest substance in the universe and omnipresent in the human being, ojas is responsible for higher states of consciousness, purity of thoughts, perfect health, positivity in feelings, love, joy, better immunity, longevity, intelligence, creativity, memory, bliss, and thought processes. When an individual’s inner consciousness awakens spontaneously, ojas increases.

In a nutshell, ojas is the sap of the entire physiology and sustains the life of an individual.
When sufficient, it confers immunity, strength, and vigor.  It is a wholesome biochemical substance that nourishes all body tissues and has a direct influence on the nature and quality of physical, mental and emotional life.


There are a few ways we can increase ojas in our bodies:
 
  • Maintain a positive state of mind.
  • Eat wholesome foods that are suited to your current state of doshic balance. (Learn more about getting an Ayurvedic evaluation.)
  • Promote optimal digestion-Food prepared by a happy cook, properly spiced, and eaten with mindfulness will go a long way to improving digestion. (Learn more about Optimizing Digestion.)
  • Perform periodic cleansing or panchakarma (as panchakarma can be quite depleting it is best done under the guidance of an Ayurvedic practitioner.)

By making simple changes to our lifestyle we can live a more abundant and integrated life!

Laurene's classes are a slow flow hatha blend with roots in Astanga, Anusara, and Iyengar styles and drawing upon traditional yoga techniques, therapeutics, and philosophy. Emphasis is on proper alignment, building strength and flexibility, gaining understanding of the human systems (physical, energetic, mental, emotional, spiritual), and blending yoga into your daily life.  You will leave this class feeling relaxed, grounded, and re-energized!

According to ayurveda, milk provides special and unique nutrition that cannot be derived from any other type of food. Milk, when digested properly, nourishes all the tissues, promotes balanced emotions, and helps to balance all the doshas. It is one of the most important foods to promote ojas.

Ayurveda teaches that icy cold beverages are to be avoided and milk is no exception. Also, the pasteurizing process "scrambles" the molecules in milk, making milk harder to digest. Some of what is thought to be lactose intolerance is actually our body coping with the jumbled molecules. By boiling the milk before we drink it the molecules are re-organized and are easier to digest.

Allow the milk to foam up at least once, being careful not to boil over. In addition to changing the molecular structure of the milk so it is much easier for human consumption, heating the milk reduces kapha, making it lighter to digest.

Date Shake

Ingredients

    4-5 whole, pitted dates (Medjool variety or similar is best)
    1 cup whole organic milk (preferably not homogenized) (use lowfat if on a light
    diet)
    Pinch of cinnamon

Instructions:

    Gently boil milk, then remove from heat:
    Put milk, cinnamon and dates in automatic blender.
    Blend until dates are ground fine.
    Serve warm in winter, room temperature or slightly cool (not cold) in summer or
    if a strong Pitta imbalance exists.
