As always, I wanted to let you know about some of the great shows that are coming up here at Smalls.
On Monday at 7:30 PM we have one of the true veteran artists of New York City, Tardo Hammer and his trio. If you haven't had a chance to hear Tardo yet I urge you to do so. He plays with true authenticity and uncompromising musical values. His trio with Lee Hudson on bass and Jimmy Wormworth is well worth coming out to hear.
Wednesday and Thursday at 9:30 PM we have the fantastic Taylor Eigsti coming in with two different groups. On Wednesday with Ben Williams on bass and Justin Brown on drums. On Thursday as a quartet with Julian Lage on guitar, Scott Colley on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums. I'd like to mention that opening for Taylor on Thursday is the pianist Glen Zeleski who will be doing a solo show. Glen's been getting a lot of attention and this is a chance to hear him play solo piano.
Friday and Saturday I'm psyched to have my old friend and Smalls veteran Sherman Irby come in with his group for the 10:30 PM slots. He's got a fantastic band with Vincent Gardner on trombone, Rick Germanson on piano and the McCoy Tyner rhythm team of Gerald Cannon on bass and Montez Coleman on drums. I'm sure this will be swinging. Also, on Friday night, March 1rst, be sure to check out Lucas Pino and his No Nonet. This is an excellent band with some excellent writing.
On Sunday we have our resident veteran singer and teacher Marion Cowings performing with his group. I would also like to mention that Marion does a class each Sunday at 1PM. This is open to all singers and has a $40 fee to be coached personally by Marion. Marion will perform with his trio at 7:30 PM.
