The Future of the CUC’s ACM

Our Annual Conference and Meeting has traditionally included both a business meeting and an extensive conference program for participants of all ages. For some time now, there have been concerns about the expense, participation rates, and staff and volunteer time associated with a large-scale annual gathering. One suggestion worth considering is that of holding the conference and gathering component every two years. The CUC invites you to think about the advantages and disadvantages of each option and then to help determine the future of these events by filling out the Conference survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CUC_Conference

For Congregational Presidents: Not-for-Profit By-law Changes

Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) is following the federal government’s lead, and changing the framework by which not-for-profits are created, governed and dissolved.

The new Ontario Act is due to be proclaimed on July 1, 2013, and existing not-for-profit corporations will have a three-year transition period once ONCA is in effect. This will allow them sufficient time to make any changes to their incorporation and other documents that are necessary to bring them into conformity with ONCA.

Congregations in other provinces should check with their provincial legislature to keep up to date on legislative changes. The CUC’s proposed by-laws, which are in compliance with the new federal legislation, are here.

Healthy Congregations

Two Day Training Program for
Congregational Leaders
July 19 –20, 2013

This Healthy Congregations training is based on the program developed by Dr. Peter Steinke, and helps congregations to enrich and expand their ability to apply principles of systems thinking in their role as a congregational leader.  During the two day program we will explore how leaders can best deal with anxiety (their own and that of others), conflict, change and growth.    Supporting leaders in managing change, stress and conflict in the congregation is particularly important in congregations that are anticipating change and considering growth.

Participants will learn about:
  • Systems theory as it relates to congregational life
  • Anxiety and Conflict
  • Fostering Congregational Health
  • The role of the leader

National Religious Educator Gathering

This is an opportunity for Religious Educators from fellowships and congregations large and small to gather and share ideas, network, offer and receive support, learn about resources, discuss the feasibility of a Canadian chapter of LREDA (Liberal Religious Educators Association), tell your stories, and be strengthened in community with each other. If you’ve never attended an ACM, are feeling isolated, or want to connect with others who do the work you do – this is for you. The Unitarian Universalist Association’s General Assembly

The season for annual gatherings of Unitarian Universalists across the continent is upon us. Following on the heels of the Canadian Unitarian Council’s (CUC) Annual Conference and Meeting (ACM) this May, the Unitarian Universalist Association’s (UUA) General Assembly (GA) will be taking place in Louisville, KY, June 19-23, at the Kentucky International Convention Center.

UUs from across the United States and Canada are invited to take part in this largest annual gathering of Unitarians and Universalists, to worship, witness, learn, and connect, as well as participate in policy decisions for the UUA. The annual conference is open to everyone, although UUA congregations must certify any voting delegates to take part in the democratic process. Beyond the business meeting (plenary) sessions, conference attendees will have many opportunities to engage with our wider spiritual community, and explore the ways in which we may live our UU values. Programs for youth and children will also be offered.

For more information about GA, this year’s programming, proposed agenda, and registration information, visit uua.org/ga.

Goldmines, and Institutes, and Leadership Schools - Oh My!

As the CUC revisions and re-imagines our own leadership development offerings, we want to lift up the leadership development and deepening opportunities that are going on this summer south of the border.  There are multiple Goldmine Youth Leadership Schools happening in Washington, Wisconsin, New York State and Maine, as well as other youth oriented camps and programs.  There are also adult Leadership Schools and Institutes happening in Utah, Wisconsin and New York state, in addition to Renaissance Modules and Our Whole Lives trainings (in some cases the adult and youth programs are being offered concurrently specifically to make travel planning and carpooling extra easy).
