We had a phenomenal week! Taylor Eigsti’s fantastic shows were sold out. Also, thanks to dropping our pay wall for the shows, we had a tremendous amount of viewers watch the shows worldwide. This is going to lead to a new paradigm on how we present our live video in the future. I can’t say too much today but you’ll be hearing about it in the next few months. In the meantime, we will be choosing one night per week. this week will be Wednesday, for a free live video show so that everyone can get a taste of what Smalls has to offer.
This week, as usual, we have some great shows. On Monday night we’re featuring a young pianist who’s been making headway on the scene lately, Mike Bond. He’ll be performing with his trio, which features Alex Claffy on bass and Kush Abadey on drums. They’ll be opening for Ari Hoenig and his quartet, which also features an amazing young pianist, Eden Ladin. Joining the quartet is the fascinating Tivon Pennicott on tenor and Noam Wiesenberg on bass.
Tuesday night is our regular shows – me doing my solo piano show from 7:15 to 9:15. At 9:30 PM is our “Legacy Little Big Band” featuring the truly amazing Frank Lacy and then at midnight are Kyle Poole and his “next generations” jam session – which has become quite the hang and is a lot of fun to check out if you’re out late on a Tuesday.
Wednesday and Thursday we are featuring guitarist Lage Lund and his quartet with Glen Zaleski on piano, Matt Brewer on bass and Jochen Rueckert on drums. They start at 9:30 PM both nights. Lage’s got a terrific CD on our label, SmallsLIVE that you should check out.
Friday and Saturday night we are featuring the amazing and entertain Jay Collins and The Kings County Band. Jay is an alum of the “old” Smalls and besides being a virtuoso tenor and flute player is also a rough and tumble blues singer. His shows are part jazz and part blues/rock. The band is awesome. If you haven’t had a chance to check out Jay, I highly advise it.
On Saturday for our 7:30 PM set we have a true master of the piano, Don Friedman, coming in. Don is an eloquent and contemporary player with a beautiful touch and concept.
On Sunday, following Johnny O’Neal will be the Grant Stewart Quartet featuring Tardo Hammer on piano, Paul Sikivie on bass and Phil Stewart on drums. Grant also has a release on SmallsLIVE, which has been getting quite a bit of critical acclaim this month. If you come for Johnny, please stick around and hear Grant.
