CDC announces the launch of its Tips From Former Smokers Campaign Launch on March 4th!

Dear Colleagues,

NAQC is pleased to announce that CDC’s second National Tobacco Education Campaign will begin airing on Monday, March 4. Last year’s campaign significantly increased call volume to the quitlines, encouraging many tobacco users to quit. We look forward to just as successful a campaign this year!

Here is an update on the campaign from CDC:

CDC’s Office on Smoking and Health is excited to update you on the upcoming Tips From Former Smokers  campaign activities, including the planned national media buy.  As you may be aware, OSH has been busy during the past several months developing the second round of Tips ads for the campaign (Tips 2).  These ads expand on the initial Tips 1 campaign ads by including additional population groups and health conditions that we were not able to feature in the first round. We want to share some information with you regarding the upcoming media buy, but please note that some details may change. Please consider the information below as DRAFT.
  • Select Tips 1 ads will begin airing both on national and local cable TV on Monday, March 4th.  OSH is not planning any additional media outreach activities at this time. The Tips 1 ads that will be aired during this time include Terrie’s Tip, Roosevelt’s Tip and Buergers’s Disease Tip.  Jessica’s Asthma Tip ad will run in Spanish on Spanish-language stations. To view these ads, please visit our campaign Web site www.cdc.gov/tips
  • Tips 2 ads will begin airing on April 1. The total duration of the paid campaign is anticipated to be 16 weeks.
  • The Tips Web site will be updated on April 1st and will serve as a comprehensive resource for campaign content, including:
o   Overviews of the health conditions featured in the campaign
o    More real stories and additional videos of the participants featured in the ads
o    More badges and buttons to place on your own site
o    Social Media feed and direct links to Tips content on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest
           o    Spanish language campaign resources
o    An enhanced “I’m Ready to Quit” area with expanded content
  • OSH is planning several media activities to support the launch of the Tips 2 ads.  We’ve listed below several resources that will be available prior to April 1 to assist you in promoting the Tips 2 ads.
  • We will be conducting a special promotion for health care providers mid-way through the paid portion of the campaign. This initiative, called “Talk With Your Doctor,” will encourage healthcare providers to use the campaign as an opportunity to talk with their smoking patients about quitting.  Stay tuned for more information about this exciting opportunity!
How Can You Leverage the Tips 2 Launch on April 1st and Beyond?
CDC has a variety of ways that partners can leverage the campaign, including reaching out to your own constituents (e.g., membership base, listserv members, state or local affiliates, health care providers, and community leaders) and to the public to promote the importance of tobacco control and encourage smokers to quit. Specifically, partners can:
  • Share or repurpose campaign materials and highlight how this campaign is relevant to your group.
  • Engage in earned media relations opportunities (opinion editorials, letters to the editor, campaign Qs and As, etc.).
  • Place our matte articles in your newsletter or on your Web site—general, health care provider, and population-specific articles will be available.
  • Highlight information about the campaign on your organization’s Web site, magazine, or newsletter using the participant biographies relevant to your group or the disease overviews provided.
  • Host community events, either live or online via social media.
  • Post and share our Web banners, buttons, and badges.
  • Re‐post our Facebook and Twitter messages.
  • Use our Web content about the campaign and the health effects of smoking as syndicated content for your organization’s Web site.
  • Access and share our video content on YouTube.
Since December, NAQC has been convening meetings with CDC, NCI and the state quitline service providers to ensure that state quitlines are prepared for the campaign. These meetings will continue throughout the campaign. Please let us know if you have any questions about the campaign or if there are ways we can help support your efforts!

NAQC extends its best wishes for a successful campaign to CDC, the states and the quitline service providers!

Regards,
