ND Legislation ~ March Update

The Maryland Association of Naturopathic Physicians is still hard at work spreading the message to legislators about the importance of licensing naturopathic doctors (NDs) in Maryland this year with SB 783 / HB 1029. We are countering the misinformation being spread by our opponents with support letters from Maryland physicians (MDs/DOs) and clear facts about naturopathic medical training and education.

We are grateful to all those who sent in letters of support when our hearing dates in Annapolis were pushed back slightly.  Even though the hearings may now have passed, it’s not too late to influence the outcome of this process by sharing YOUR HEALING STORIES.  The MDANP is still collecting your personal healing stories, and your representatives in the state legislature still need to hear from you about how important access to naturopathic medicine is and how you have benefitted from the care you’ve received from your ND. Our goal is to gather over 100 letters from patients and supporters - including health professionals and family members who have witnessed positive change in a loved one thanks to naturopathic medicine.

Directions for submitting a Letter of Support:
1. Visit www.mdanp.org and follow the clear instructions for downloading letter templates and e-mailing completed letters to Dr. Erin Kinney.
2. Please type in your NAME and FULL Address at the end of the letter
3. To find your DISTRICT - visit www.mdelect.net and type in your street address
4. EMAIL the WORD file to Dr. Erin Kinney: kinney.e@gmail.com

Featured Recipe
Coconut Quinoa Pilaf

(from The Whole Life Nutrition Cookbook, p. 230)

This yummy Thai style quinoa dish is delicious served on its own or with some sautéed tofu or chicken and steamed broccoli for a balanced meal.

INGREDIENTS:
2 cups quinoa (dry)
1 can coconut milk
2 cups water
1 bunch green onions, sliced
1 medium red bell pepper, diced small
3 to 4 cloves garlic, crushed
¾ teaspoon sea salt
½ to 1 teaspoon crushed red chili flakes
½ to 1 teaspoon crushed red chili flakes
½ cup chopped cilantro

Serves 4

DIRECTIONS:
1.    Rinse the dry quinoa in a fine mesh strainer under warm running water.  Quinoa has a natural saponin coating that repels insects and birds and can create a bitter taste.  Rinsing the quinoa with warm water removes the saponin.

2.    Place rinsed quinoa into a medium saucepan with the coconut milk, water, sliced green onions, diced red bell pepper, garlic, sea salt, and chili flakes.  Cover and bring to a boil, then turn heat to a low simmer and cook for about 20 minutes.

3.    Remove pot from heat and let pilaf cool in the pot for about 10 minutes.  Then add chopped cilantro and gently fluff with a fork.  Serve hot.
