Sainsbury’s launch Active Kids 2013

Following the success of previous years, Sainsbury’s Active Kids 2013 scheme is up and running to help children lead healthier and more active lives.

Now in its ninth year, Active Kids has so far put over 4.9 million pieces of equipment into the hands of millions of children across the UK and will this year be extended to include groups that provide opportunities for disabled young people.

Nominations are now open for the 2013 National Lottery Awards Best Sports Project. The Awards are open to community sports projects that have received Lottery funding and help make a difference in their local community.

The Awards are open to any community sports project that has received National Lottery funding from Sport England.

2013 Sport and Recreation Alliance Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013 Sport and Recreation Alliance Awards to recognise sporting organisations or professional clubs for their achievements.

These annual awards from the Sport and Recreation Alliance are designed to highlight the breadth of work that is undertaken in the community sport and recreation sector.

New Draft of National Curriculum Published including Physical Education

The Government has published draft programmes of study for all National Curriculum subjects across Key Stages 1-4. A review of the National Curriculum was launched in January 2011 with the aim of increasing the quality of teaching delivery and giving teachers greater freedom over how to teach. The consultation process is open until Tuesday April 16th.

The National Curriculum for physical education states that its aims are to ensure that all pupils:
  • Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lifestyles

Lottery funding to help disadvantaged youngsters to get lives on track

Thousands more young people on the margins of society are to benefit from a programme that uses the power of sport to turn their lives around, thanks to National Lottery investment from Sport England.

Get on Track was set up by double Olympic gold medalist Kelly Holmes to help disadvantaged young people develop the skills and confidence to get their lives on track and find a job.

Headteachers and athletes warn against cut to school sports funding

Sports administrators, head teachers and former athletes have warned the government that an imminent decision over the future of school sport is pivotal to delivering the promised legacy from London 2012.
