LEO IGWE

Breaking the Taboo of Atheism in Black Communities

Central London Humanists are supporting and sponsoring this important event
The Attic, Hackney Picture House, 270 Mare Street E8 1HE, London

Leo IGWE, Nigeria's most prominent humanist, and a human rights activist, will be giving an important talk on 'Breaking the Taboo of Atheism in Black Communities' during a short visit to London to attend the NSS Secularist of the Year event before returning to Africa to continue his research into witchcraft.
Humanists 'of all hues' are encouraged to show their interest and support for this area of work as black non-believers, in London and elsewhere, start to become more confident and active in openly challenging the over-bearing presence of religion within their families and communities and its negative social, financial and educational consequences.

I am proud to count among my friends the humanist and  Human Rights Defender, Leo Igwe.
Next Monday, in Hackney, there will be an important event when Leo will be giving a talk to the fledgling group, London Black Atheists.
In the UK people have often been a little reticent about women's  groups or black groups as if they thought that instead of combating sexism and racism they were somehow perpetuating it.
Ghettos are inflicted on people from the outside. Associations of common interests are created by free people coming together and their interests are not to be crudely defined by gender or skin colour. London Black Atheists is not only a safe place for London BME people but also a space for anyone interested in appreciating the BME experience and supporting people facing the distinct challenges of  "coming out", as it were, or just living within family and community, as a humanist with a BME background.
The history of colour is not symmetrical.
Leo's talk "Breaking the Taboo of Atheism in Black Communities" will I know be of interest to all.
