TWR E-Snapshots - January 2010
Welcome to the latest edition of TWR E-Snapshots!
From Drug Lord to Preacher by Way of Gospel Broadcast

Carlos was an important man in a cutthroat world. He was a specialist in the processing of cocaine and merited an entourage of 40 bodyguards.

For a drug lord, though, Carlos had a curious hobby: He loved reading, and when nothing else was available, he turned to the Bible to pass the time. But he and his bodyguards didn’t know how to act on what they were reading together.

Then one day, Carlos was clearing vegetation by himself deep in the Colombian jungle and badly sliced his leg with a machete. As he lay bleeding, he turned on the radio for company and heard the story of a father who welcomed home his prodigal son.

Read -- and listen to -- what happened next.

NRB Gives International Award to Lemuel Larrosa

He’s a role model who founded a Christian broadcast ministry in Uruguay, is a radio host and longtime pastor, and serves as TWR’s director of Hispanic Ministries. And that doesn’t include many of his other contributions to the church in Latin America.

It’s certainly fitting, then, that the National Religious Broadcasters association singled out Lemuel Larrosa for its 2013 International Achievement Award.

“Lemuel has been a faithful servant of Christ, with nearly five decades of service in radio and pastoral ministry,” said NRB President and CEO Frank Wright.

Can I Tell Others About Sex-Abuse Emotional Scars?

Surely, God would never want someone worthless like me, Ella told herself. She demanded that God tell her where he had been when she was being sexually abused as a girl.

Ella was the child of missionaries who didn’t know that their young daughter’s school principal was turning the girl over to men who molested her. Later, an older boy abused her in the yard while her parents met for Bible study indoors.

As an adult, she joined a media ministry but wasn't sure she should open up about the pain and embarrassment that had scarred her life so deeply. How can these Christians possibly understand? Maybe they’re just stronger than me.

Ella’s story is one of several told by Marli Spieker in her book, “When Hope Wins.” Through the lives of women from different backgrounds and nationalities, Marli shows how TWR’s Project Hannah ministry focuses on restoration and healing, love and life as it addresses the plight of women worldwide.

Listener Letter: Closeness in Crisis

When she and her family lost their prosperous business and property, Emma drew strength from listening to TWR-Philippines’ program Light of Hope.

“When everything was lost, I did not know what to do. I cried out to God, and told him my feelings and thoughts. I told him I did not understand his ways but I would entrust my life to him. …

“Your programs are really beautiful. They have helped me understand that the crisis drew me closer to God. It has also quenched my spiritual thirst. I used to go to church regularly, but I did not have a personal relationship with him. I thank God for the crisis I faced. … God has taught me to trust in him and not my ways.”
