April 30, 2013 PlanSmart NJ's NJ Regional Planning Summit: “Investing for the New Normal”
Increasing natural disasters have caused unprecedented flooding in parts of NJ, resulted in widespread power outages, and damaged our transportation infrastructure. As immediate crisis management of the most recent storm gives way to longer term recovery planning, what should we as a State be considering for redevelopment and disaster preparedness? What role does land use planning and infrastructure investment play in our decisions about how and where to rebuild and how to prioritize upgrading our damaged and aging infrastructure to stimulate a robust economy and protect our natural resources? The Summit will present a balanced approach to these issues, considering everything from economic growth to environmental protection. Through a range of speakers, it will include intermediate and long-term perspectives on the challenges ahead. The Summit will be organized around two themes: 1) Community rebuilding; and 2) Infrastructure Investment www.plansmartnj.org/2013summit

Decrease In Young Drivers May Influence Transportation Infrastructure
Just over two-thirds of Americans between the ages of 16 and 24 were licensed to drive in 2011, noted a recent article in DCStreetsblog. That's the lowest percentage since 1963. The decrease in young drivers may have a profound influence on future investments in transportation infrastructure.

Walkable Communities May Lead to More Exercise
A study in the journal Social Science & Medicine found that having a local grocery store in a neighborhood increased residents' physical activity an extra 5 to 6 minutes per week. And for every recreational facility available such as a park or beach, residents' physical activity increased by an extra 21 minutes per week. "This means that where there is an environment that supports walking with access to multiple facilities, residents walked much more," said Professor Billie Giles-Corti, the study's author.
