Welcome to The Salt Shaker!
We’re excited to send you the first issue of Element 11’s newsletter, The Salt Shaker. This has been an exciting year thus far for Element 11. We’ve seen a number of invigorating changes leading to new programs and the revival of some old ideas. The launch of this newsletter is just one of the many of these changes.
Featuring important deadlines, upcoming events, & informative tidbits, The Salt Shaker will highlight the most important news about E11 and our events. We look forward to producing an attractive, informative and useful newsletter. Please enjoy, and let us know if you have any feedback!

Tickets!
We'll be using printed tickets for Element 11 this year -- it's a souvenir and waiver all in one!
The cost is $90, except for a special sale on April 27th at the Volunteer Vitalization event. There will be 250 discounted tickets available that day for $75 each, one per person, cash only.
After that, $90 tickets will be available on-line and in person until July 5th or until 1,200 tickets are sold, whichever is sooner. Any remaining tickets will be sold at the gate for $150 cash.

Christmas Tree Burn
After delaying this event due to poor air quality, we’ve set a new date!
March 30, 2013 at Seabase. A community potluck will start at 3pm. The burn will ignite at 8pm. We’ve got over 500 trees to burn. This is going to be quite a show; see you there!
We'll also be collecting donations for the Safe Harbor Women's Shelter. Click to view their wishlist.

Volunteer Vitalization Event
Our annual spring volunteer recruitment and training extravaganza.
The day will involve workshops in many areas and functions of the organization, including department and committee signups, new volunteer orientation, department information booths, service and work projects, Djs, great vibes, awards and loads of fun. Plan on joining us for this fun and engaging annual volunteer event. Check out the Facebook event page for more details.

2013 E11 Theme
Labyrinth - Find yourself by getting lost!
We are all on the path… exactly where we need to be. The labyrinth is a model of that path. A labyrinth has only one path. It is unicursal. The way in is the way out. There are no blind alleys. The path leads you on a circuitous path to the center and out again.
At its most basic level, the labyrinth is a metaphor for the journey to the center of your deepest self and back out into the world with a broadened understanding of who you are.

Green your Burn - Greening your Art
Sourcing your Materials
Wherever possible, reuse and repurpose materials. Acquire used materials from socially and environmentally conscious sources rather than buying new.
Use Materials Efficiently
Use your materials to their greatest potential while reducing, recycling or reusing waste generated by your creative process.
Consider the End
During the planning phase; think about the end of the event and wrapping up your art installation. Will your materials be burned, donated, repurposed? Check with a thrift store in SLC called the “Restore” which also accepts donations for Habitat for Humanity. They are often willing to reclaim lumber, hardware and more.
Built for Burning?
If you do choose to burn your art installation, plan from the very start to not include toxic materials or paint that would be released into the atmosphere. Paint is very bad to burn, plastics and other synthetics are even worse.
Energy Efficient Light & Power
Lighting your installation at night and during set up is essential. Choose energy efficient ways to light your artwork that don’t include using glow sticks. Look into biodiesel generators, solar panels or people power.
Leave No Trace!

Transporting Art and Materials
Consider teaming up with other artists or theme camps to share the ride.
