"Singing, planting rice, village songs more lovely than famous city poems "
- Matsuo Basho
A classic haiku to start this newsletter from the master Basho. Made me think of Smalls - "village songs" - Greenwich Village, perhaps. And the planting of the rice - the seeds of jazz music to blossom and bear fruit for our future generations to feast on. I've said it often, Smalls is like a monastery, monks, acolytes and laity all here to share and receive.
This Monday we have our resident Ari Hoenig coming in with his trio - guitarist Gilad Hekselman & bassist Johannes Weidenmuller. Opening for Ari on Monday is the very fine pianist Jill McCarron and her trio. If you are coming by on Monday, please get there in time to hear Jill as well.
On Wednesday we have a formidable double-header starting with tenor saxophonist Noah Preminger and his quartet which features Glen Zaleski on piano, Matt Pavolka on bass and Rob Garcia on drums. Our "Round Midnight" concert features trombonist David Gibson and a stellar cast - Theo Hill on piano, Noah Garabedian on bass and Kevn Kanner on drums. If you can't make it to the club, please check out our LIVE VIDEO stream which will be free that evening - just go to www.smallsjazzclub.com and click LIVE VIDEO anytime during the evening.
Thursday evening we are featuring Sharel Cassity and her quintet, which includes Aubrey Johnson singing, Orrin Evans on piano, Dezron Douglas on bass and E.J. Strickland on drums. Sharel has been getting more and more attention - and she wel deserves it. Sharel is an "original" Smalls Jazz Club musician, playing at this club since the 90's. She is also our featured interview on our SmallsLIVE interview blog - click here.
Friday and Saturday for our featured 10:30 PM show is the legendary Ralph Peterson and his "Fo'Tet" Augmented. This features Felx Peikli on clarinet, Joseph Doubleday on vibes and Alex Hoth on bass. Come out and see a rare appearance of Ralph Peterson at Smalls.
Also on Friday for the 7:30 show we have Cory Weeds. Cory, besides being a phenominal musician also runs his own jazz club in Vancouver, BC - The Cellar. Cory is a good friend and is one of the very few people I can commiserate with on the impossible task of running a club and being a professional musician at the same time. On the band is Ian Hendrickson-Smith on tenor, Spike Wilner (me) on piano, Sean Cronin on bass and Brian Floody on drums.
Sunday afternoon from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM we are presenting a really fine pianist - Falkner Evans and his group. If you haven't heard or yet heard Falkner take a chance with this afternoon (4:30 PM to 7PM) concert. It features Marc Mommas on tenor, Belden Bullock on bass and Matt Wilson on drums.
As always, I hope to see you in person at the club!
My sincere wish for your well being!
Spike
