Satisfy Your Fiber Cravings
at the Adirondack Folk School's 1st Annual Fiber Intensive Weekend
Friday, April 12 - Sunday, April 14
From knitting to felting, weaving to beading, or spinning to making bobbin lace, this weekend has something for everyone! Whether you're a fiber arts enthusiast or a complete novice, immerse yourself in fiber and take classes from some of the area's most well-known fiber artists.
In addition to classes, you can participate in two special weekend events on Saturday: a Quilt Road Show and Appraisal in the morning and a tour of Battenkill Fibers Carding and Spinning Mill in the afternoon.
You will not want to miss this fiber-filled weekend!

Upcoming Classes and Events at AFS
 Moccasin Making, April 6 & 7
This two-day workshop is for students age twelve and up! Come make a pair of traditional gathered-toe moccasins like those that native people in the area would have worn. A template of your feet will be made to cut out the needed leather from brain-tanned and smoked buckskin or tandy leather. Awls will be used to make the holes that will be laced up with hand-made, spiral-cut leather lacing. You will complete both moccasins by the end of the workshop. The class will be complete with a short history lesson on the footwear.
 Betsie Canoe, April 20 - 26
Have you ever wanted to build your own boat? Our boat building and paddle making program kicks off this month with the Betsie Canoe! In this class you will learn all the steps required to build a wood and canvas canoe from ribs to canvas to finishing details. Build a Skywoods Betsie Canoe as a group. The Betsie is a steady 15 foot canoe excellent for family outings or over-night solo paddling. A good canoe for kids or grand-kids. Full on the ends with a flat bottom for stability. At the end of the class the Betsie Canoe will be raffled off to one lucky student for the price of the materials.

New Program at AFS: Join us for Open Spin!
Whether you’re an experienced spinner or a beginner looking for some hints and tips, bring your wheel every 3rd Wednesday at 7 p.m. from March through October and be prepared to enjoy an evening of open spinning with other fiber enthusiasts. Open Spinning Nights are April 17, May 15, June 19, July 17, August 21, September 18, and October 16. If you do not have your own wheel, call the school ahead of time to check on wheel availability. This program is free to all, but donations are welcome!

Meet Scott Barkdoll
Scott has been a life-long woodworker starting with making tree houses as a kid and spoons and bowls as a teenager. He became a self-employed craftsman specializing in standing-seam tin roofs, antique house restoration, and cabinetry as a young adult and then progressing into canoe building in 1995. He founded Skywoods Canoe Company in 1996, specializing in the restoration and building of wood and canvas canoes and other small wooden boats. Scott has taught at the Michigan Maritime Museum, the Wooden Canoe Heritage Society Assembly, the Kroka Expeditions Vermont Semester Program, and has done one-on-one owner-builder tutorials at his shop in Shoreham, VT.
In 2013, Scott will offer two boat building classes; Make the "Betsie" Canoe in April and the "Elf" Canoe in September!
Local Citizen Scholarship Program
AFS is pleased to offer our Local Citizen Scholarship Program. The scholarship program will provide a $10 Tuition Certificate to all residents in the Hadley-Luzerne School District (proof of Driver’s License or Voter Registration Card is required). One Tuition Certificate per resident will be issued valid for any AFS class. To receive your Local Citizen Scholarship Coupon, visit the school at 51 Main Street in Lake Luzerne from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Meet Carol Puntel
Carol has been knitting for "too many years to count." She also worked for 28 years for the State of New York managing programs for people with developmental disabilities and training staff. Carol has combined her loves of teaching and knitting in Colonie, NY, and has been an instructor at a yarn store in Saratoga since 2004. Carol has grown her skills by attending nationally-ranked knitting workshops sponsored by The Knitting Guild of America and Knitter’s Magazine. Her philosophy is that knitting is something to be enjoyed, so her teaching style is humorous and relaxed. Carol is offering two classes during the Fiber Intensive Weekend: a morning and afternoon offering on April 12 of Bling Your Knitting with Beads. She will also offer a class on May 11, Variations on Purl's Shawl.
