Watershed Update

Meeting with Liz Lewis
Liz Lewis, Marin County's Watershed Program Director, will be our guest speaker on March 6, 7 pm, at the MarinLink office. She will be presenting the "State of the Gallinas Watershed." Please come to find out what is happening, what we should be looking for next and what we can do to support this.

Watershed Tours
Thank you Rachel Kamman for leading a fascinating tour of the Gallinas Creek Headwaters on Feb. 21. We had a good crowd of adults, children and dogs as we walked the ridegeline and learned the hydrology and history of the area.

GWC will host our second Watershed Hike, led by Rachel Kamman, on March 9 from 3-5 PM, concentrating on the Gallinas Creek Baylands. Meet at the floating dock, Gallinas North Fork, near McInnis park entrance and the picnic grounds.

April 20, from 3 - 5 PM will be our third Watershed Hike led by Rachel Kamman, on Gallinas Creek and the Urban Corridor. Meet at the Northwest corner of the Embassy Suites Hotel parking lot for a car shuttle.

May 11 from 3-5 pm will be our last Watershed Hike led by Rachel Kamman, on the Santa Venetia Open Space. Meet at the East end of Vendola St.

You won't want to miss these hikes! You will become a watershed expert.

RAMSAR status for Gallinas Creek
The United States has named the San Francisco Bay/Estuary (SFBE)  as its 35th Wetland of International Importance, effective on World Wetlands Day, 2 February 2013, including the marsh area of the Gallinas Creek watershed. The San Francisco Bay is the largest estuary on the Pacific Coast of the US, encompassing approximately 160,000 hectares, and it is widely recognized as one of North America’s most ecologically important estuaries.

This is part of the larger RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. RAMSAR is an intergovernmental treaty that provides the framework for national action and international cooperation for the conservation and wise use of wetlands and their resources. The Ramsar Convention is the only global environmental treaty that deals with a particular ecosystem.

Monthly Meetings
The GWC Board meets on the first Wednesday of the month at the MarinLink offices, on the second floor of the Northgate Mall above the food court. Meetings are from 7 - 9 pm. All are invited and encouraged to attend. We discuss many matters of interest concerning our local area and creeks in general. The next meeting is March. 62013.

See you in the Watershed!
