Amrita-Seattle on India News

News-piece translation:

Amrita-Seattle has initiated the health care project "Combat Malnutrition" in Diamond Harbor, West Bengal. The rate of child malnutrition is increasing every year in India.
So far a total of 167 malnutrition children under age 5 has been identified in nine villages of Diamond Harbor.

To serve these children, the USA based non-profit Amrita-Seattle has made collaboration with West Bengal Government. On 13th February 2013, in the village of Kanupur Dhanbedia, the program was first implemented. The attendees were: ICDS officers Sanjeev Raxit, Reena Mandal, Health Officers: Laxmi Haldar, Jugomoy Chakraborty. Amrita-Seattle was represented by Debala Adhikari, Kashinath Gosh, and Maya Gosh.

Fifty children (< 5 years old) were checked by the Health Care doctor Sureed  Mallick on 13 February. The livelihood of majority of the households is dependent on selling fish. Most of the children in the region suffer from malnutrition.
Amrita-Seattle with the help of ICDS, Integrated Child Development Services and Govt. of West Bengal is working hard to raise parental awareness and combat malnutrition. These children are all under-weight compared to their age.

This is a six month pilot project where children will be receiving a therapeutic nutritional supplement called "nutri-mix" from Amrita-Seattle as prepared by the organization CINI (Child In Need Institute). The nutri-mix packets will be distributed by the Anganwadi workers.  The physicians will monitor the health of these children for six months. Awareness on how to incorporate nutritional food in their regular diet will be provided to the parents as well.
In Seattle, members of Amrita-Seattle are working hard to raise funds for this project.

Amrita-Seattle @ Uttoron Saraswati Puja

We are grateful to The Cultural Association of Uttoron and its governing members for giving us the opportunity to put up stalls for raising funds on its every event, and also at this year's Saraswati Pujo on Feb 16, 2013.
We collected sponsorship for total 54 SAM Kids for 6 months from the generous donors, out of 167 which is only 33% of the total cost required for the project. We are still updating our records and would appeal to all to send your support for rest of the SAM Kids.
At Amrita-Seattle stall we carried out several activities like games for kids, face painting options, collection activity for donations and more. We did  a live update of each donation, going directly to the children under this project which turned out to be very promising.
