Have you ever questioned whether it is a smart idea to exercise during the cold and flu season?  Or wondered if a good sweat might actually clear some of your cold symptoms?

By: Kathy Stevens
Director of South End Club Fitness Program

Although research has shown that breaking a sweat can protect you from having certain cold or flu related sick days, it has not shown it to be much help once you are already sick.  In a study done by David Nieman, Ph.D., out of the Human Performance Lab at Appalachian State University, it was found that regular exercisers experienced 43 percent fewer sick days than those who didn’t exercise.  Regular exercisers also reported less severe symptoms during the days they did have colds.  Yet, there have been no human studies to date that have shown exercise to shorten cold or flu symptoms once a person is already sick.

With that in mind, below is the normal rule of thumb for exercising during an illness,  *as reported by the Mayo Clinic:

-  Light to moderate exercise is usually OK if your signs and symptoms are all “above the neck” symptoms you may have with a common cold, such as runny nose, nasal congestion, sneezing or minor sore throat.

  • Consider reducing the intensity and length of your workout.
  • Don’t exercise if your signs and symptoms are “below the neck”  -such as chest congestion, hacking cough or upset stomach.
  • Don’t exercise if you have a fever, fatigue or widespread muscle aches

SOUTH END JUNIOR  TENNIS

by, Vasile Beches
Director, Junior Tennis South End Tennis and Racquet Club

The South End Junior Tennis Winter Session is in full swing and our future tennis stars are taking full advantage of our program! We use the USTA Junior methods that match kids with the right sized balls, racquets and court dimensions, so they can experience immediate success and have a great time while learning the fundamentals of the game.

QUICK TIP FOR PARENTS: When practicing with your kids, use the proper tennis balls for their age and level; if you don’t have those, make sure that you hit the balls at their waist level, assuring that they won’t get an improper grip!

If you have any questions regarding the Junior Program or Adult and Junior Lessons, come by Court 9 to meet me, or contact me at: Vasilie (310) 989-5159 or send me an email at vtbtennis@aol.com

Have a Great Tennis Day!

Workout with
Bruno Perron

Certified Personal Trainer

Let me introduce myself to those who are recent members, my name is Bruno Perron. I have had the privilege of working at South End as a Certified Personal Trainer for 20 + years. During that time, I have trained every age group from young, high-school athletes to a 92 yr. old former athlete. My early-on experience came from when I lived in Canada and was fortunate to be part of the training staff for the Montreal Canadien Professional Hockey Team. I have learned a lot since those days and with that experience added to the years as a South End trainer, I now help people (athletic or not) reach their strength goals and decrease their risk for injury through weight training.

Recently, I have been approached by several long-time members who are concerned about how aging has affected their balance, strength and agility. Unfortunately, once an adult begins to experience these effects, it can result in becoming less mobile. In fact, inactivity is the number one death risk for people over 50 (American Heart Association). The perfect solution would be just to take a pill that could remedy all that ails us and the sad thing is, we would all obligingly pay a lot for that pill – if it truly worked! Well good news, it has been proven that working out with weights IS THAT PILL and the benefits are numerous: lowers blood pressure, lowers cholesterol, builds muscle which burns fat calories by increasing your metabolism, increases bone density, strengthens tendons and ligaments PLUS you feel and look great!

Due to popular request, I will be starting my 4-Week Weight Training Class for South End members beginning Tuesday, March 12th. The class is suitable for all levels of fitness and will focus on all that is mentioned above. We will be meeting twice a week on Tuesday/Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in the gym. The cost is $120/per person for the entire 4 weeks (regular cost is $520 with a $400 discount).

To enroll, contact Bruno (310) 257-1961 or email: brunoperron@sbcglobal.net Space is limited – can only take 8 people – so call today and get yourself moving towards a stronger and healthier you!
