EWHP Lenten Letter

Dear Friends,

We hope that you're having a peaceful and prayerful Lenten season this year, and that you're enjoying these updates from EWHP. You'll remember from our last update that our board met via conference call in January, and we're looking forward to seeing each other at the Tri-History Conference in San Antonio this summer (see the box to the right for more on that).

Some sad news...with heavy hearts we tell you of the passing of Marjory Luise Johnson Hatfield, beloved daughter of our own Susan Johnson, former president and long-time EWHP board member and administrator of the Historical Society of the Episcopal Church. Marjory died at the age of 44 on February 27, 2013 after an extended illness. Please hold in your prayers Marjory's family, Susan and all who mourn.

All the Saints this month honors Deaconess Harriet Bedell. Follow this link to see what board member Susan Guise has to say about this great Floridian and her mission work with Native Americans in the 20th century.

Want to read a fascinating history of a great woman of faith? The Rev. Barbara Schlachter reviews American Jezebel: The Uncommon Life of Anne Hutchinson...follow this link to find out more.

We have positions on our board that will become vacant in June. Do you feel called to serve on the EWHP Board? If you’re interested in serving in this capacity, we’d love to talk with you about it. Do email episcopalwomenshistory@gmail.com and we’ll be in touch!

Faithfully from your blogger,

Mary Robison

Library and Archives notes...

Christoph Keller, Jr. Library, General Theological Seminary. During February-March 2013, the Library celebrates Black History Month with an exhibit on Slavery and Anglicanism in the Long 18th Century. If you're in the NYC metro area, stop by and see the exhibit, or check it out on the Keller Library blog! For April-May, we're working with some wonderful materials to explore women's ordination to the priesthood. Watch this space for more information about early attempts at ordination prior to the Philadelphia 11.

EWHP is planning a workshop at the Tri-History Conference on oral history. Many thanks to Margaret Landis of NEHA for sending us this link to History Matters, a gateway for teaching U.S. History.
