CCTV Broadcast Schedule
SCC programs can be seen on CCTV, Comcast Cable Channel 21, for two weeks starting the Wednesday after the meeting on Wednesdays at 4pm, Thursdays at 4:30pm, Fridays at 7pm, and Saturdays at 1pm.
Salem City Club’s mission is:

Oregon’s imprisonment rate, while still below the national average, has grown at over three times the rate of the national average in the last decade. The budgetary implications of this trend are significant. In May, 2012, Governor Kitzhaber reconvened the Commission on Public Safety in hopes that it would lead to changes in Oregon’s criminal justice system. He appointed recently retired Oregon Chief Justice Paul J. De Muniz to Chair the Commission.
The foreword to the recent Commission on Public Safety Report to the Governor put the problem in perspective:

In the past decade, Oregon’s prison population has grown by nearly 50 percent to over 14,000 inmates and taxpayers now spend more than $1.3 billion each biennium to pay for corrections
-
Meanwhile, Oregon has cut funding to critical public safety areas like state police, county sheriffs, community corrections, and victim services.
-
Without action, prisons will consume an even greater share of Oregon’s public safety budget and overall state spending.

The state projects its prison population will grow by another 2,300 beds in the next 10 years. This prison growth—fueled mostly by nonviolent offenders—will cost taxpayers an additional $600 million dollars.
After months of intense study, the Commission issued its report on December 17, 2012.
De Muniz will discuss the work of the Public Safety Commission, what it discovered and its recommendations to the Governor and the legislature.
Paul J. De Muniz was elected to the Oregon Supreme Court in 2000 and served as Chief Justice from 2006 to 2012. Prior to serving on the Court, he practiced civil and criminal law with the Salem firm of Garrett, Seidemann, Herman and De Muniz PC. During his distinguished career, he has lectured and taught throughout the nation and abroad, including at the Harvard Kennedy School, the Willamette University College of Law and as a visiting professor at Khabarovsk State University in eastern Russia. He has received numerous prestigious awards for his leadership in the legal field. In 2010, Hispanic Business Magazine named him among the 100 most influential Hispanics in America. De Muniz delivered the annual State of the Oregon Courts addresses at Salem City Club from 2006 to 2012. Please join us to welcome him back to Salem City Club.

House Speaker Tina Kotek (D - N/NE Portland) and House Republican Leader Mike McLane (R - Powell Butte) will discuss opportunities and challenges to achieve effective teamwork that can optimally resolve the most important issues for Oregon. They will offer their assessment of how well this years' Oregon legislature is collaborating, and what results might be accomplished.
Finally they will also discuss their individual leadership roles at the Capitol this year, and the successful dynamics of the 2012 Oregon legislature.
The audience is invited to bring questions for these two legislative leaders. This is the second forum in the LWV Spring series 'Democracy, Dialogue & Elections.' The Program is free and open to the public.
