REVIEW - Commonwealth filmmakers celebrated at inaugural event

Commonwealth Shorts was held February 25-27 at AUT, as a film-making workshop and capacity building scheme to give new Writers and Directors the opportunity to make a film along the theme of 'relationships'.

The five writers and directors involved in this initiative were: Wanjiru Kairu (Kenya), Oscar Knightly (New Zealand), Jules Koostachin (Canada), Kareem Mortimer (The Bahamas), and Lisa Harewood (Barbados). Their  short films premiered on February 26th at the Academy Cinema, and  will also screen at international festivals and be used in advocacy work across the Commonwealth.

Two AUT students as well as staff from Te Ara Poutama and Communications Studies were in attendance at the Commonwealth Shorts event, building relationships with local and international partners and filmmakers.

Commonwealth Shorts is a  partnership between Commonwealth Writers, B3 Media and The Commonwealth Broadcasting Association/Worldview, and is supported locally by Documentary NZ Trust, New Zealand Film Commission, CoLab & Communication Studies (AUT).  Read more about the event and launch of these films on the Commonwealth Writers website.

FAREWELL - Aukje Thomassen

Dr Aukje Thomassen speaking at the Encouraging Entrepreneurship Seminar, May 2012.

CoLab deeply regrets the passing of our dear colleague, Dr Aukje Thomassen, who lost her battle with cancer in February. While based in the School of Art and Design,  Aukje was a member of the CoLab management board and was a strong supporter of interdisciplinary practices and new entrepreneurial and creative technologies approaches.

We will greatly miss her friendship, humour, knowledge, openness and enthusiasm.

STAFF PROJECTS - CoLab staff out and about at Auckland Zoo

On Wednesday 20th February, CoLab staff made the journey to Western Springs for the opening of Wandering Creatures, an interactive exhibition by CoLab lecturer and artist, Kim Newall.

The unique creatures in the exhibition are made using a mix of traditional drawing and animation methods, as well as digital interactive media. They'll take up roost at the Auckland Zoo as a way of gaining acceptance from the physical world, evolving their unique identities through audience engagement.

Wandering Creatures runs until Saturday March 16, 2013 at the Auckland Zoo, Motions Road in Western Springs. You'll need an Android smartphone or tablet and the Wandering Creatures app to view these moving 3D creatures -  and it's well worth it! A very engaging experience.
Read more about this unique exhibition on the Digital Art Live website.

Kim will also be running a workshop that explores augmented reality and the process behind creating the "creatures", on day one of Animation Revelations. More information here: animationrevelations.com/workshops/

LAB(S) UPDATE - AUT Labs now under CoLab umbrella

In order to support access, ongoing capability building, interdisciplinary opportunities and sustainability, a number of faculty based laboratories have recently been brought under the CoLab umbrella.

These facilities, which will be managed in partnership with their respective heads of units and stakeholder groups, includ
e the Textile and Design Lab (TDL), the Additive Manufacturing Lab (previously Rapid Prototyping), the new Motion Capture Lab, and the Interaction and Immersion Lab (previously CoLab’s Interactive Suite and VR lab).

While recognising the critical importance of specialist research and development associated with these facilities, CoLab will also work with lab managers and technicians to ensure access for teaching and new research initiatives, provide support for staff and help publicise the activities of these areas.
