My, the time flies by. I sometimes need to catch myself and just remember how poignant each moment is - it's so easy to get swept away in minutiae. Each evening passes as if it's a dream and then the week is over and then - time to crank out the newsletter! There are times when I just stand at the top of the stairs and survey Smalls in full swing - musicians playing, packed with folks, good vibes, friends greeting each other and just can't believe it. It's an amazing environment that I hope all of you get to experience at some point.
This week we start out with our hometown hero Peter Bernstein. He'll be doing a solo guitar set on Monday opening for Ari Hoenig's group. Pete's a terrific solo player if you haven't had the chance to hear him yet. Look for his solo guitar album to be coming out on SmallsLIVE.
On Tuesday is our regular "Legacy" band - its a small, big band - three horns and three rhythm section and features the force-of-nature Frank Lacy on trombone. These guys have a weekly residence but don't take it for granted. Come out and check them.
This Wednesday and Thursday is the amazing Dayna Stephens and his quintet for a two night slot. Featuring Billy Buss on trumpet, Eden Ladin on piano, Joe Sanders on bass and Darrell Green on drums. It's sure to be an intriguing and exciting show. On Wednesday night we will be broadcasting the show for free on our site - click 'live video" on our site, the paywall will be down. Also, this week we debut our Tumblr Interview Blog which features an interview with Dayna. Following Dayna's show on Wednesday is the wonderful Simona Premazzi and her quartet. Simona is a stellar pianist and will be coming in with the equally amazing Melissa Aldana on tenor, Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Shinnouske Takahashi on drums for our "Round Midnight" concert.
Friday and Saturday night we are excited to present the great Ken Peplowski and his quartet. Ken is simply one of the best clarinetists alive today and you should not miss this show. He'll be in with the dynamic pianist Ehud Asherie, Martin Wind on bass and Matt Wilson on drums. Also on Friday evening, opening for Ken is the bassist Jon Burr and his "Grappelli Project" - this includes Jonathan Russell on violin, Bria Skonberg on trumpet and the fantastic Howard Alden on guitar. Makes for a great double header.
This Sunday at 7:30 we are always delighted to have the master Bucky Pizzarelli come in with his counterpart Ed Laub for a lively guitar duet. Bucky and Ed are always wonderful and a lot of fun.
