Regional Revelation: Champagne
While most wine drinkers are familiar with Champagne, not many realize that the average bottle of Brut is made with mostly red grapes. Pinot Noir and its relative Pinot Meunier get pressed directly after harvest, so the dark skins contribute no color to the clear juice. These two grapes are usually blended with white Chardonnay - the other member of the tasty triumvirate responsible for this world-famous bubbly. Learn from labels: Blanc de Blancs is a 'white of whites' made exclusively with Chardonnay while Blanc de Noirs, a 'white of blacks,' is made of red grapes only.

A duchy, owned by the Duke of Monferrato, Castel Boglione was known as Castelvero until the Middle Ages. Since 1954, Castelvero (the winery) has been sourcing grapes from small growers throughout the region, over 1,000 hectares in total, manually harvesting and vinifying their wines in small lots, under the watchful eye of the founder's son, Claudio Manera.
