Upcoming Webinar: Building Relationships with Landlords - April 12, 2013 - 1:30 pm EDT

On April 12, 2013, from 1:30-3:00 pm EDT, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) will be hosting a webinar on Building Relationships with Landlords. The webinar will focus on providing grantees with ideas, practical tools, and resources for working with private landlords to obtain housing in different settings and a discussion on tenant/landlord rights and responsibilities. The webinar will not cover the legal aspects of the tenant/landlord law nor provide legal advice. However, it will provide ideas and suggested resources on how service providers can locate information on tenant/landlord laws, federal and local resources for obtaining housing, and will serve as a forum for asking questions on how best to work with landlords.

Ali Manwar, Ph.D., will open the event on behalf of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). Dr. Manwar is a SAMHSA Government Project Officer in the Co-Occurring Homeless Activities Branch with the Center for Substance Abuse and Treatment (CSAT). Dr. Manwar has extensive experience in substance abuse and mental health services programs.

Connie Campos, Housing and Homeless Resource Network (HHRN) Deputy Director, with JBS International Inc., manages technical assistance (TA) for SAMHSA grantees that serve individuals who are homeless with co-occurring disorders and provides in-service training to SAMHSA staff on issues related to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) programs and funding. Ms. Campos has managed TA to grantees on housing program services and HUD policies. She also managed several HUD contracts, including training, technical assistance, and research on Public and Indian Housing Occupancy, Tenant-based Rental Assistance (Housing Choice Voucher Program-HCV), and other Public and Indian Housing programs. Ms. Campos has 25 years of experience in housing and community development; worked for three public housing authorities administering the HUD programs, including the Section 8/Housing Choice Voucher program (HCV); and conducted landlord orientation sessions.

Alexandra (Alex) Jackiw, M.Ed., is the Board Chair for the National Apartment Association (NAA) and Vice President and Managing Director of Residential Client Services for McKinley in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Ms. Jackiw’s experience includes all aspects of property management, marketing, training, consulting, receivership/REO assignments, and new business development. She has also served as President of the NAA Education Institute for two years and is a licensed real estate broker in Indiana, holding the Certified Property Manager (CPM®) designation through IREM and Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor (CAPS) designation through NAA. Ms. Jackiw received the NAA Education Institute Apartment Career and Education (ACE) Award in 2011 in recognition of her commitment to training industry professionals. Ms. Jackiw has held an adjunct faculty appointment at Virginia Tech and is currently an Assistant Professor at Ball State University where she has continued to teach in the Residential Property Management program for the past nine years.

Patricia Tucker, M.B.A., is with Advocates for Human Potential (AHP) and an experienced trainer and technical assistance (TA) provider with special expertise in supportive housing and other issues related to serving individuals who are homeless. At AHP, Ms. Tucker trains agencies and staff in Permanent Supported Housing, Supported Employment, Harm Reduction, Motivational Interviewing, and Housing First. She also trains and provides TA on supportive housing and supported employment for the Detroit-Wayne County Community Mental Health Agency, as part of a Michigan Department of Community Health program to assist individuals with severe disabilities and co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Ms. Tucker teaches courses in supportive housing principles at Wright College in Chicago and has more than 20 years working in all levels of the supportive housing industry.
