2) New Activist Guide on EI Changes
Prince Edward Island's Coalition for Fair EI has put together an "activist guide" to help PEI community members continue their fight against the Harper government's changes to the Employment Insurance system. The Activist Guide is available for download at http://www.cupepei.ca/eiCampaign.php.
"We held Town Halls in communities across Prince Edward Island to hear people's concerns about the EI changes, and there's a lot of fear out there," says Lori MacKay of CUPE PEI, one of the lead organizations in the Coalition for Fair EI.
"But this is PEI, and we're proud of our work ethic. We're proud of our seasonal economy. The fight isn't out of us yet to preserve the EI system that supports our workers and communities."
The EI activist guide includes practical suggestions for engaging politicians and government officials to work against the EI changes, ideas for organizing effective demonstrations, and resources for getting media attention.
"The Coalition for Fair EI went to communities to listen to people's concerns and experiences. What we heard was a desire to do what it takes to urge all levels of government to rethink these harmful changes," says Michelle Jay from the PEI Advisory Council on the Status of Women, another Coalition member.
"The Activist Guide offers sensible ideas for action, and it is backed up by support from the Coalition for Fair EI as we continue to work to reverse the harm to the EI system."
The PEI Coalition for Fair EI is a coalition of social justice, labour, and women’s organizations. For more information, email lmackay@cupe.ca or call Lori McKay at 902-626-1112.

4) Prime Minister's Volunteer Awards-Prix du Premier ministre pour le bénévolat
Did you know that almost half of Canadians volunteer their time and efforts to make a difference in their communities? If you know of a business, a not-for-profit organization or an individual that is making a difference in your community, show your appreciation by nominating them for a Prime Minister’s Volunteer Award!
But do it soon—you only have until April 15, 2013.
The awards recognize achievements in a wide range of volunteer activity, including:
-
businesses whose commitment to social responsibility strengthens the communities in which their employees live; and
-
individual volunteers or groups of volunteers who give of their time, energy and expertise;
-
not-for-profit organizations whose innovative approaches to volunteerism make a difference every day in the lives of Canadians.
Award recipients will be recognized at a ceremony and can identify an eligible not-for-profit organization to receive a grant for $5,000 (regional award) or $10,000 (national award). The voluntary contributions that these businesses, not-for-profit organizations and people make are truly valuable. Let’s make sure it doesn’t go unnoticed!
