Launch of Cochrane Oral Health Group Pre-Submission Checklists for Authors

COHG has developed two new checklists to help authors ensure that their reviews and protocols meet the new Methodological Expectations of Cochrane Intervention Reviews (MECIR) standards.

The Cochrane Handbook is the official document that describes the process of preparing and maintaining Cochrane reviews, and you should refer to it at all stages of the review process.  The Cochrane Collaboration have also developed the MECIR guidance, a set of methodological expectations for Cochrane protocols, reviews and updates of reviews on the effects of interventions.

COHG supports these conduct and reporting standards which reflect the recommendations in the Cochrane Handbook. Full details about the expectations can be found on the Cochrane Editorial Unit website.

COHG's editorial process aims to take account of these standards and make sure they are implemented in our reviews. To facilitate this, we are introducing the COHG Authors Pre-submission Checklists for both protocols and reviews (and review updates).

The checklists are designed to help authors to complete Cochrane protocols and reviews to the desirable standards before they are submitted for editorial approval. Each checklist gives information on the details required to be reported in the protocol/review including formatting, contact details, references and appendices. Authors should make sure that they take account of every item in the checklist.

Authors working on first drafts of either protocols, reviews or updates, should complete the relevant checklist and email it to cohg@manchester.ac.uk when the completed draft is checked into Archie for editorial approval. Failure to submit the checklist will result in the rejection of the protocol, review, review update.

Open Access agreement of Cochrane Reviews redefined

The Cochrane Collaboration has renewed and re-defined its partnership with John Wiley & Sons, Ltd., to publish The Cochrane Library from February 2013 for a further six years, to the end of 2018.

Under the new agreement, new Cochrane Reviews and Cochrane Reviews with new citations, and Protocols published from 1 February 2013 will become available on an open access basis 12 months after publication in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (green open access).

Additionally, authors and funders will have the option to fund individual articles, or groups of articles, to be open access immediately upon publication (gold open access).

Authors from many low- and middle- income countries will be eligible to have their publication fees waived; and should consult the guidance on waivers and discounts now available on the updated access options page of The Cochrane Library, here. More information about all aspects of the new access options is also available on this page.

The Licence for Publication Form for Cochrane Reviews and Protocols has been amended to reflect the introduction of green open access. Specifically, it introduces the new right for authors to post a PDF of the final version of their Protocol or Review (as specified by the Publisher) in an institutional repository or any repository mandated by the author’s funder, such as PubMed Central, 12 months after publication.

It also clarifies the right to post the Protocol or Review as an electronic file on the author’s own website and/or the author’s institution’s intranet, using the PDF version available in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews.

Have you signed the All Trials petition yet?

The Cochrane Collaboration is one of the supporters of the All Trials campaign, the aim of which is to get the results of all clinical trials (past and present) registered and published.

Cochrane cannot produce accurate and rigorous systematic reviews unless the results of all trials are published and openly available. As the All Trials website says: “Information on what was done and what was found in these trials could be lost forever to doctors and researchers, leading to bad treatment decisions, missed opportunities for good medicine, and trials being repeated.

The founder of the Cochrane Collaboration, Dr Iain Chalmers, explains why this is crucial on the MRC website. He comments: “It’s not only unethical and scientific misconduct; it is also simply a waste of precious research resources. As illustrated by numerous examples, under-reporting of research has led to harm to patients from exaggerated estimates of treatment benefits and safety, and built-in inefficiency in efforts to discover useful and safer treatments.

Hundreds of organisations have now committed to the aim of getting all clinical trials registered and their results reported. These include regulators and faculties. One of the biggest drug companies in the world, has signed up and others are considering it. Some of these groups are now starting discussions about the practical ways to stop trial results being withheld.

20th Anniversary video series

20 years of The Cochrane Collaboration
Throughout 2013, The Cochrane Collaboration is celebrating twenty years of its existence.

As part of a series of events to mark this anniversary, a series of videos has been commissioned focusing on the ideas, achievements and people that have contributed to its growth since 1993.

Visit the anniversary site to find out more and watch the short video series, updated every fortnight.

Want to update your skills?
Cochrane Training

There are always plenty of Cochrane training opportunities being organised to take place around the world. To stay updated with what's happening, take a look at the workshop list. The Canadian Cochrane Centre also organizes online webinars that you can participate in or watch the recorded video of them.

Summary of Findings (SOF) table guidance has been developed by the Cochrane Applicability and Recommendation Methods Group (ARMG) and the GRADE working group. Beside the training material that you find on the Cochrane website on this topic, there are other training opportunities to learn about the SOF tables and how it fits into the GRADE system.

Lastly, the Cochrane Schizophrenia Group has produced a series of RevMan tutorials leading new reviewers though the user guide. The clips start from 'creating a review' right though to 'submitting a review for editorial approval'.

Cochrane Colloquium 2013
Cochrane Colloquium 2013

Not only does 2013 mark the 21st Colloquium, but it is also the 20th anniversary of The Cochrane Collaboration.

Québec City is the birthplace of French North America and has a unique blend of history and culture. The Colloquium venue is the Québec City Convention Centre, which is located in the heart of downtown and close to plenty of restaurants, museums and boutiques.

The theme of this year’s Colloquium is Better knowledge for better health. Several members of COHG's editorial base and some of our authors have already confirmed their attendance, and they look forward to hopefully seeing you there.

The call for nominations for several Cochrane Awards is now open. Further information about attending the Colloquium can be found here.
