Term 2 is upon us - already! The Science is Primary Conference was a great success, and now we are preparing for the Beginning and Preservice Teachers Conference on May 2nd. We can also confirm plans for the joint STAQ/QEST Hot Science Conference are well underway in preparation for June 24 & 25 in Cairns. Also, don't forget to complete our survey so STAQ can represent members' views to the Parliamentary Inquiry into Assessment Methods in Senior Maths, Chemistry and Physics.  Here's to an exciting start to Term 2!

Beginning Teachers: STAQ Beginning and Preservice Teachers' Conference

The Beginning and Preservice Teachers Conference features networking, a keynote speaker and two workshops for primary and secondary teachers. It is held on the evening of Thursday 2 May at the Ecosciences Precinct, Dutton Park. One participant last year said "More valuable than a uni lesson unpacking curriculum, resources, teaching and assessment. Plus hands on with inquiry learning. Great!" Beginning teachers: Register now or invite an early career teacher in your staffroom or network.

Parliamentary Inquiry - Last Chance!

Reminder: Last chance to complete a brief survey so that STAQ can present the Parliamentary Inquiry into Assessment Methods in Senior Maths, Chemistry and Physics with a submission that represents your views about assessment in senior science subjects.

QEST/STAQ HotScience Conference in Cairns

Join primary and secondary teachers of science and science technicians from around Queensland at the 2013 Hot Science Conference in Cairns, a two-day professional development experience proudly hosted by the Science Teachers' Association of Queensland and the association of Queensland Education Science Technicians. Featuring keynotes, workshops, excursions and trade displays, this conference will be sure to motivate, inspire and provide you with ideas and skills in teaching and laboratory management. CONASTA Earlybird Registration now open!

In 2013, CONASTA is hosted by the Science Teachers' Association of Victoria, and will take place in Melbourne on July 7-10. Earlybird registration is now open. If you're planning to attend for the first, second, or third time, the Ruth Dircks Scholarship may help you get there. Register for CONASTA now!

2013 Peter Doherty Awards - Celebrating 10Yrs

These awards recognise students, teachers, support officers, schools, leaders, volunteers, mentors and organisations that demonstrate an outstanding and innovative contribution to science and science education in Queensland. STAQ 60th Queensland Science Contest

Start planning now for your students to enter this year's science contest. Dates have been announced for the 60th Queensland Science Contest. We look forward to receiving the outstanding projects of your students in 2013.

RACI Titration Competition 2013

Here is an opportunity for students to take part in a scientific competition. The process is simple, and designed to encourage students to develop an interest in Chemistry from a young age. Students can participate as individuals or with a friend, small groups or class groups. The competition is open to students at the primary level at the junior secondary level. RACI Australian National Chemistry Quiz (ANCQ)

Entries close soon for the 2013 Quiz, taking place on Thursday 25th July. The quiz is designed to be as free of course syllabus content as possible. Students compete against students from their own level in their own state/territory or country. Find out how to register here (external link).

Science at the Shine Dome

Each year STAQ nominates a teacher to attend this prestigious event held in May at the Shine Dome, hosted by the Australian Academy of Science. Find out more about nominating (external link).

Environmental Careers and Opportunities Expo 2013

The ECO Expo is designed for students in years 10-12 and will be held on Tuesday 23rd July at The Edge, Southbank, Brisbane. It is designed to highlight the opportunities available to students interested in sustainability along with their teachers and parents. Find out more...(external link)
