Spring has sprung here in Fredericksburg and HFFI is ready to go with a variety of events, new publications, and preservation initiatives in the works!
The Lewis Store will be open on the 3rd Saturday of each month to allow weekend visitors the opportunity to see the Lewis Store and our latest exhibit, and we hope to see all of you at our Fredericksburg Social on May 16th, join us for some food, drink and good conversation! On the advocacy front, HFFI Executive Director, Sean Maroney, has been diligently working with the City to identify and address our Preservation Priority structures here in the city.

HFFI Presents its 2012 Preservation Awards
On March 24th, at our Annual Meeting, HFFI presented awards to the following groups or individuals in appreciation for their preservation efforts here in Fredericksburg. Thank you to all of our recipients for your dedication to preservation and Keeping Fredericksburg Historic!
E. Boyd Graves Preservation Award:
Elizabeth Lontz and Craig Sincock for their sensitive renovation and exemplary stewardship of the historic home at 520 Caroline Street (an HFFI preservation easement property);
Francis and Sally Valentino for preserving and restoring the fire-damaged historic building at 702 Princess Anne Street; and,
Kathryn and Benjamin Wafle for their sensitive rehabilitation of the historic building at 415 William Street.
Lillian D. Reed Volunteer Award:
Nancy Bruns, for her dedication and many years of service in support of HFFI and its Oral History Program.
Pillars of the Community Award:
Dr. Robert C. Wheeler, Jr. (1935 -2012), for his dedication and many important contributions to local preservation.
President’s Exceptional Service Award:
City of Fredericksburg, for their efforts and collaboration in support of local preservation.
Executive Directors’ Special Recognition Awards:
Fredericksburg Cemetery Company in recognition of their continuing efforts to protect and preserve the historic Fredericksburg City Cemetery and the
Washington Heritage Museums organization for their continuing efforts to protect and preserve four of Fredericksburg’s most significant historic landmarks.
A special thank you also goes out to Bobby Kerr for her wonderful presentation on the Renwick Courthouse. Everyone that attended enjoyed it and learned something new about this historic Fredericksburg landmark.
Fredericksburg Social
Looking to just relax after a long day? Wouldn't it be nice to do that with fellow friends of preservation in a beautiful historic environment? Well HFFI has something for what ails you! The Fredericksburg Social is here, a new and improved version of our previous Pints for Preservation events. The first one will take place on Thursday, May 16th, at the Mary Washington House- 1200 Charles Street from 5:30- 8:00pm.
Tickets are only $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Your ticket includes a tour of the home, kitchen dependency, and gardens as well as an appetizer buffet and for members, the first drink is on us! Beer and wine will be available as well as non-alcoholic options. Tickets are on sale now at the Lewis Store, just stop by or call. 540-371-4504.
HFFI Earth Day Participation
Saturday, April 13th, HFFI participated in the city’s Earth Day Celebration at Old Mill Park and had wonderful time!
Informative and discussion-provoking posters designed by our own Executive Director, Sean Maroney, were on display to show visitors how the greenest building is the one already built! Facts and information on how historic preservation and green building go hand in hand are still available at the Lewis Store, so stop by for your copy. Or, check out the Project Green Lab website sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
HFFI also set up its popular Junior Archaeology Lab where kids get a hands-on introduction to archaeology and its importance to learning about our past. Our junior archaeologists got a chance to wash and tag artifacts, and then learn a little bit about what they had found.
Thank you to all our volunteers who came out and helped! HFFI members, industry professionals, and students from the University of Mary Washington were on hand to help make our Earth Day experience a huge success. We couldn’t have done it without you!!

First Friday at
the Lewis Store
On Friday, April 5 th, HFFI opened the doors of the Lewis Store to the community for a First Friday Open House. A big thank you to everyone that stopped by -new friends as well as our loyal members!
Visitors enjoyed our new Renwick Exhibit featuring history on James Renwick Jr., the Renwick Courthouse itself, as well as thoughts on the future of this important Fredericksburg building. Visitors could also view a video of UMW Professors, Gary Stanton and Michael Spencer, that highlighted the attic above the south wing of the courthouse and the bell tower.
HFFI was very fortunate to receive a collection of prints of the historic Renwick Courthouse done by local photographer Stephen Graham. These beautiful images were taken in the bell tower itself, of the actual historic Paul Revere Bell located there, as well as of the Renwick Building. Call for Journal Articles
Do you have a topic that you have researched and written about? Or is there something that has always interested you but you needed a reason to really dig into it? Now is your chance!
The Publications Committee is looking for articles for upcoming Journals of Fredericksburg History. You need not be a professional historian to submit, just a dedicated lover of history. Please contact them at publications@hffi.org if you are interested in submitting.

Markers, Anyone?
In 2012, HFFI's Marker Committee researched and offered historical markers to twelve of the city's homes and buildings, including one 18th-century dwelling and eight 20th-century structures.
Now in its fourth decade, the Committee continues to invite both HFFI members and non-members to join hundreds of proud homeowners who already display our bronze markers, maintain their attractive homes, and support the preservation of historic Fredericksburg.
