April Bout Recap

Toxic Shocks 114 vs. Apocalypstix 101

Last month’s winning Apocalypstix took to the track against the Toxic Shocks in the Shock’s first game of the 2010 season. With the taste of victory still on their tongues, the Stix strapped on their skates in preparation for battle. The Shocks were not intimidated though, pulling out ahead by 20 points in just the first few jams of the night. The Shock’s blockers controlled the pack, allowing jammers Alassin Sane and Desi Scarnaz to gain lead jammer status multiple times. This strategy led the Shocks to a 40 point lead over the Stix at half-time. In the second half, the Stix showed the crowd that this was anyone’s game, as the Merchant of Menace (a special sub for the injured Demi Gore) fired through a power jam and brought the Stix a much needed 20 points. With victory in sight, the Stix put the wheels to the floor with harder hits and smarter plays. Jams by Nora Gretz and Tequila SlamHer put the Stix right on the heels of the Shocks with only a few minutes left in the game. The Shocks held them back as the clock ran out, ultimately winning over the Stix with a score of 114 – 101.

Denim Demons 130 vs. Sake Tuyas 92

With a loss to the Apocalypstix last month, the Sake Tuyas were ready for vengeance, taking control of the game and establishing a lead on the Denim Demons right off the bat. The Demons, however, were not quite ready to hand over a win to the Sakes. Smart jams by Nora Gretz (a sub for Sissy Splaysek) and Demanda Rumble helped the Demons pull ahead of the Sakes just before half-time. The next half proved to be the second wind that the Demons needed, as they continued to pull ahead of the Sakes by around 60 points. The Sakes played great and fought hard all night, but were not able to overcome the Demon Darkness with a final score of 130-92.

Rollergirls Doing Good

Bad to the Bone

In April, ARG took a break (just a short one) from the brutality, got in touch with our warm fuzzy side, and kicked off a successful fund-raising drive for the Atlanta Humane Society. AHS puppies up for adoption made a special appearance at the April bout, raised funds at a “kissing” booth, and generally stole the show (in the courtyard at least!).

By the end of the bout, ARG had raised over $500 for the Humane Society from our web-based drive and the bout-night fundraiser—a pretty impressive haul considering that puppy kisses went for just a buck and the puppy breath was free! These funds will help purchase food, supplies, and hopefully more time for some of the animals in the shelter. And even better, two adorable puppies left the bout with new adopted families. Thanks to our fans and L.O.R.D.s who helped out and made the drive for AHS such a success!

World Fitness Day

Your Atlanta Rollergirls attended the First Annual World Fitness Day at the Georgia Dome on Saturday, May 1. World Fitness Day is the brainchild of Jane Fonda to promote the importance of health and wellness throughout our entire lives. Our girls had a great time, skating around, talking to participants, participating in the hour-long workout lead by Jane, Billy Blanks, Denise Austin, Debbie Allen, and Richard Simmons, and having an all-over great time. We know that we will definitely be in attendance at the Second Annual World Fitness Day next year!

The Learning Tea

Founded in 2009 by ARG L.O.R.D. Takillya Sunrise, aka Katrell Christie, “The Learning Tea” raises money for the Darjeeling school and orphanage in India through the sale of flavorful Darjeeling Green and Black teas and photo prints of Christie’s travels in India. As Christie discovered on her travels in India, these kids are in dire need of aid, as there is currently no bathroom facility or running water available at their school and they rarely receive adequate nutrition. For 2010, Christie has pledged to buy the children uniforms and put a working toilet in at the elementary school. “The Learning Tea” will have a booth at the May bout. Stop by, buy some tea, and help her meet that goal.

Derby 101

“Cut Track”

Ever wonder what it means when a ref shouts “cut track,” or why this sometimes ends in a trip to the penalty box and sometimes not? Well, you probably know that derby rules require skaters to remain on the track, and if they cut a corner or straddle the boundary to pass another skater, that is “cutting track.” The general rule is that when a skater goes out of bounds, she must re-enter the track without coming back in ahead of other skaters. If she goes out and re-enters in front of one in-play blocker, it’s a minor penalty. If she re-enters the track in front of multiple in-play blockers, that’s a major penalty, and she’s going to the box.

The same rule applies when a skater who has been pushed or hit off the track by an opposing blocker. For example, if a blocker hits a jammer and the jammer leaves the track, the jammer MUST re-enter the track behind the blocker who initiated the hit. That’s why you’ll sometimes see the blocker come to a standstill after hitting a jammer out of bounds—she’s forcing the jammer to slow down or back up to re-enter the track behind her. If the jammer doesn’t re-enter behind that blocker, that’s when the penalty applies.

But this only works if the blocker can stay inbounds! If the blocker follows the jammer off the track, then the jammer is free to enter ahead of them without penalty. That is why you will also sometimes see the jammer not worrying about where the blocker is, and no penalty being called. And now you know!
