SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule Mar. 25th, 2013

Hello My Friends:

I wanted to mention my friend Cory Weeds.  Cory, like myself, is a professional jazz musician who also runs and oversees a music venue.  His club, The Cellar, in Vancouver BC, is an amazing and vibrant jazz venue that Cory runs with vision and purpose.  I have to admit that The CellarLIVE came before SmallsLIVE (I stole the idea from him).  On top of everything else that Cory does, he also leads jazz tours of New York City. Last week he organized one full week of jazz concerts at many of the venues in the city (we did two at Smalls).  He's responsible for about 50 tourists who he brings all over the city to hear jazz.  It's an admirable feat and not only exposes a lucky group of folks to some of the best music they'll hear in their lifetime but it also creates work for the artists and revenue for the clubs.  This week was Cory's third successful tour.  Check out his club's website HERE.  My hat's off to you, Cory.  Amazing job.

On Monday this week we start with one of my personal favorite humans and artists, Pete Malinverni, who's coming in with his fantastic trio at 7:30 PM before Ari Hoenig's show at 9:30.  Don't miss this chance to hear this amazing and original musician.  On Tuesday night please don't forget about the great Frank Lacy and the Legacy Band, which always features Josh Evans, Stacy Dillard, Theo Hill and others.  They hit at 9:30 PM regularly on Tuesdays and the band sounds great.

This Wednesday and Thursday evening we present guitarist Gilad Hekselman and his group which features Mark Turner on tenor, Joe Martin on bass and Marcus Gilmore on drums.  Gilad is an astonishing improvisor and this band has played a lot together which should make a dynamic and rewarding couple of nights.

Our "Round Midnight" concert on Wednesday, after Gilad, presents the pianist David Bryant.  David was featured on Dezron's new record on SmallsLIVE (see the review below).  His quartet has Mark Shim on tenor, Dezron Douglas on bass and Eric McPherson on drums.  On
Thursday night, at Midnight, we are featuring the young, brilliant pianist Emmet Cohen and his trio to play a set and host a jam session.

Our weekend showcases the excellent Marcus Strickland and his quartet.  His concert start at 10:30 PM with his brother E.J. Strickland on drums, David Bryant on piano and Rashaan Carter on bass.  This is a truly vital and organic group and I'm sure they will amaze you.

On Friday, for our 7:30 set, we have pianist Larry Ham and his quartet.  Larry is a master pianist and longtime veteran of the New York scene.  He's coming in with Woody Witt on tenor and his steadfast trio of Lee Hudson on bass and Tom Melito on drums.  Larry Ham is always well worth listening to.

On Saturday at 7:30 PM we present Will and Peter Anderson and their amazing octet of top-notch musicians playing some beautiful arrangements.  This is also a concert well worth attending.

On Sunday, I hope you take the opportunity to hear vocalist Milton Suggs, who is coming in as a duet with pianist Willerm Delisfort.  Milton is the best young male vocalist that I've heard in awhile.  Please come out and support this show.  After Milton is our wonderful Johnny O'Neal and his trio at 9:30 PM

As always, I thank you for your support and I hope to see you in person at the club.

My sincere wish for your well being!

Spike

Downbeat gives 4 stars to Dezron Douglas:  Live at Smalls in the April 2013 issue!

★★★★

Bassist Dezron Douglas begins this disc with a super-charged hat-tip to Benny Harris’ “Bish, Bash, Bosh,” taking Harris’ melody, cranking up the tempo and adding more verve and energy. Trumpeter Josh Evans and tenor saxophonist Stacy Dillard harmonize on the winding melody giving the tune a light, easy bounce. It’s a firecracker of a tune, and Douglas carries that bouncy, weightless approach through the entire live recording.

Douglas composed most of the tunes, with pianist David Bryant offering the meditative “Nita.” On the somber, muted tune, Dillard’s dark soprano takes center stage, providing a rich contrast to Bryant’s accented, bright piano style. The group’s only other cover, Gigi Gryce’s “Minority,” is given a regimental—but still plenty bouncy, of course— bent by drummer Willie Jones III. Bryant’s piano, at once both choppy and rubato, flows over the snare, Douglas plucking away a walking pattern on each downbeat. After the melody enters, the accompaniment turns to tight, compact swing. Like “Bish, Bash, Bosh,” the tune is somewhat of a transformation—and is slowed down considerably from the original—with the band putting its own mark on the piece. —Jon Ross
