SmallsLIVE Newsletter & Schedule April 1rst, 2013

Hello My Friends:

I wanted to apologize for the technical glitches in our live video stream last Wednesday.  It came at an inopportune moment which was during our weekly free show.  We've been live streaming shows from Smalls now for nearly 5 years.  People tell me that we are way ahead of the curve in terms of using this technology to share music and live events.  Our goal with this is to disseminate the amazing music from Smalls and share it world-wide.  We also hope to achieve a revenue stream from supporters to help defray the ever-mounting costs of running a live music venue in New York City.  Needless to say, the technology is not perfect and requires some constant attention.  Last week we hit a "perfect storm" of server, computer and camera issues all at the same time.  Anyway, we believe (hope) it's corrected and we invite you to tune in on April 3rd for our next free live show.  Please enjoy and we always welcome your comments.

Smalls will be CLOSED on Monday April 1rst.  The club was rented out by a movie production company.  I can't really say what the movie will be but I saw the scene description as "piano bar" - I'll let you know when it comes out.  Regardless, we apologize for those of you that were planning on coming out.

We will be open for business on Tuesday starting at 7:30 PM with my trio - I've been playing in the guitar/piano/bass format lately and really enjoying it.  This Tuesday I have the wonderful Yotam Silberstein on guitar and Paul Gill on bass.  Following me at 9:30 PM is a treat.  Trumpeter Jim Rotondi will be coming in for a rare New York City appearance.  Jim's been living in Europe lately and we're lucky to get him on one of his trips back.  He'll be joined by the dynamic Mike DiRubbo on alto, David Hazeltine on piano, David Wong on bass and the great Joe Farnsworth on drums.  Don't miss this chance to hear Jim, he's a consumate and amazing improvisor.

On Wednesday and Thursday night at 9:30 PM we have drummer E.J Strickland leading his group.  E.J's bringing in a fantastic band featuring his brother, Marcus Strickland on tenor, Jaleel Shaw on alto, the amazing Luis Perdomo on piano and Vincente Archer on bass.  Also, please be sure to stick around for our "Round Midnight" shows on both evenings.  Wednesday is the amazing trumpeter Fabien Mary visiting from Paris for a show and Thursday we have our resident Carlos Abadie and his tight-knit ensemble.  Both players are steeped in the bop/post-bop tradition and are really swinging.

Our weekend band at 10:30 PM is led by guitarist Jonathan Kreisberg.  Jonathan has a body of original material and a excellent quartet featuring Will Vinson on alto, Joe Martin on bass and the tasteful Colin Stranahan on drums.  This is sure to be a popular show so come early.  On Friday at 7:30 PM we are featuring the saxophonist Joel Press and his excellent quartet which includes Tardo Hammer on piano, Sean Smith on bass and the legendary Steve Little on drums.  Please take the opportunity to hear Joel, he's a true master and plays a melodic and graceful style which is little heard these days.  Please be sure to check out Joel's interview with Spencer Murphy on our interview blog.  CLICK HERE

Our Sunday is full of music!  For our Sunday afternoon showcase we are presenting the interesting young tenor player Jonathan Greenstein and his quintet.  At 7:30 PM we have a rare appearance from the lovely and supremely talented Hilary Gardener who will be performing a duet with pianist Ehud Asherie.  Our afterhours (11PM) presents yet another amazing trumpeter - Bruce Harris and his excellent quintet with Andy Farber on tenor, Jeb Patton on piano, David Wong on bass and Pete Van Nostrand on the drums.  Come early and stay late!

As always, I thank you for your support and I hope to see you in person at the club.

My sincere wish for your well being!

Spike
