March was a busy month for us here at Intellect Learning Center with our week long study skills workshop at Tinley Park High School and the Kid's Expo hosted by Family Time Magazine.
Our study skills workshop received outstanding reviews from students and staff. Staff members expressed how important it is for students to participate in workshops like ours. Students are handed so much information, but they are not necessarily taught how to take it all in and make it useful. Our presentation went beyond telling students what they need to do to succeed and actually provided them with the tools to do so. We thank the staff and students at Tinley Park HS for inviting us and being such wonderful hosts.
Another big thank you goes out to those of you who stopped by our booth at Family Time's Kids Expo. We held trivia competitions throughout the event and gave out tons of prizes. It really was a fun filled weekend!
We are currently gearing up for our Summer Programs here at Intellect Learning Center. Registration has already begun so please register ASAP to secure your time slot. We will hold tutoring sessions from 9am to about 7pm, but keep in mind morning slots fill up much faster than later ones.
To our ACT students preparing for the April Exam- we wish you the best of luck. There are some helpful tips about preparing for the ACT in this newsletter, so read on!

It’s April, you’re a junior in high school, and the dreaded ACT is fast approaching. Just take a deep breath and relax. Most of the stress that is associated with taking the ACT is the result of lack of preparation. The first thing students will notice—and need to be cognizant of—is that there is no one-glove-fits-all method when it comes to preparing for the ACT.
At Intellect Learning, we tailor a student’s ACT prep program to their individual needs. We aim to improve a student’s score in all areas. Students are given necessary tools to achieve success. The first step of our ACT program is for students to take a REAL ACT Exam. From this detailed analysis, we design a program that fits the needs of the student. Tutors consistently monitor progress and make modifications as needed.
We offer both one on one and group ACT sessions. One on one sessions give students individualized attention and provide a more tranquil learning environment. Group sessions, however, allow students to work together and collaborate.
Intellect’s Key ACT Strategies
The ACT is a skills and reasoning test. While there is some content on the ACT, and prior knowledge can be helpful, the main focus of ACT prep should fall on improving reasoning and critical thinking skills. The biggest mistake most students make is spending too much time studying content, and not focusing on how the ACT test is designed. The following are strategies that can help students in all areas of the ACT.
-
Familiarize yourself with the test: know the structure of the test and the type of test questions the ACT asks (Think like an ACT test writer).
-
Always answer questions you know first. Skip questions you don’t know and come back to them later.
-
Don’t second guess yourself, go with your gut instinct, and be confident in you answers.
-
Pace yourself, know how much time you get to answer each question.
-
Practice timed passages: this simulates the actual test, and also teaches you pacing.
-
Relax, while the ACT is important, it is not the only thing that colleges look at.
Intellect Helps Increase ACT Scores
When students first come into Intellect they take a REAL ACT test to assess their strengths and weaknesses. Each student is then given a specific program that aims to improve weaknesses and build strengths. Tutors address the skills and strategies that will help students improve their scores. Finally, students will work through practice passages from ACT tests and get familiarized with how the ACT test writers construct questions. Students who attend ILC tutoring regularly and practice at home can expect to see major improvements in their scores.

Miracles Made Thru Research
This article was submitted by Ibrahim Haleem, founder of Miracles Made Thru Research.
Our mission as a non-profit 501(c )(3) organization is to fund medical research in hope for a cure for DeNovo Auto Immune Hepatitis (D-AiH) and improve the long-term survival of patients requiring a liver transplant.
D-AiH is something I was diagnosed with eleven years ago at age 10 after having endured the trauma and stress of four liver transplants before the age of 6. Over the last six years Miracles Made Thru Research has raised and donated $35,000 to Children's Memorial Hospital for research in DeNovo Auto-Immune Hepatitis through three bowling benefit fundraisers. The vision of the foundation is to prevent suffering of D-AiH by individuals that have undergone liver transplantation.
We are asking for your continued support- Please do not hesitate to tell others about the opportunity to help us raise money!
Tell your co-workers, relatives, friends, and neighbors and get them involved as well!
Miracles Made Thru Research thanks you for your continuous support. Visit our website for more information: http://www.haleemfoundation.org/
