From the President's Boat

John “Nellie” Nelson of Thorne Brothers, our Wednesday April 17th meeting speaker provided a very valuable and interesting discussion on the comparison and features of Lowrance and Humminbird electronics. Everyone in attendance walked away with some new knowledge. Thorne Brothers valuable support of our Chapter is very much appreciated.

Thank You to all of our volunteers that manned the NMMI booth at the Minnesota Muskie Expo April 5th – 7th. I had the chance to walk around the hall and personally thank on behalf of all us at NMMI all of the Guides, Lure Makers, Vendors, etc. that help support our annual banquet, chapter meetings and other events. Without their support NMMI would not be a viable organization so when you have the chance, please return the favor and support them. Also a thank you goes out to Brad Patterson for coordinating everything in our NMMI booth.

We have five teams entered in the State High School Muskie Tournament. The championship will be June 28th at Lake Alexander near Motley. June 8th is the sectional qualifying tournament on Bald Eagle Lake to narrow down the four NMMI teams to two to represent us in the championship. A special thanks to Mike Riha for his organization skills to make this a success for all involved!

It is still not too late to join me and 12 other NMMI Members at the MI Chapter Challunge on Lake Vermilion the week of September 14 – 20 with the Tournament Sept 18th – 20th.

2013 will be an outstanding year for NMMI, its members and the Muskie Fishery with one of the largest stockings to date and some new twists on old events. We do need your new ideas and people to help us enhance the Muskie fishery and create worthwhile experiences for our members in process. Contact me or any of the North Metro Board Members!

June Jam Tournament

By Steve Wernersbach
Entry is now open for this year’s June Jam tournament. Tournament dates this year are: Pre-tournament sign in Friday June 14th at Wilkin’s Bar and resort on Bone Lake; fishing hours 5AM to 9PM Saturday and 5AM to Noon Sunday, June 15th and 16th with the awards ceremony at Wilkin’s starting at 1PM on Sunday. Those of you that have fished the tournament know how much fun it can be. The two day format is different from most tournaments and adds a lot to the experience.

Eight lakes in Polk County Wisconsin can be fished. Results of previous tournaments are available on the North Metro website. If you’ve fished this before joins us again. If you’ve never fished it, give it a try. The two day format really lets you test your skills.

This year’s June Jam flyer, rules and entry forms are available on our website www.nmmuskies.com. Major sponsors this year are Thorne Bros, Red Wing Lodge, Fudally Tackle, Phantom Lures, Pro Label, and Wood’n Wildlife. Suick, Naze Baits and Nauti Lures joined as sponsors at the MN Muskie Expo in April. I’ll be hoping to hear from you.

Chapter Challenge

Lake vermilion – Sept. 18, 19 and 20
The North Metro chapter is putting together teams for this year’s chapter challenge. We have made arrangements at Wolf Bay Resort for up to two cabins with the ability to hold 4 or more people in each cabin. Currently we have one of these cabins full but would also like to fill the second one. We need to commit or release this second cabin by the end of May. If you are interested in fishing and staying with us there please contact Steve Wernersbach (swernersbach@gmail.com) or Dan Mruz (ddmuskies@yahoo.com).

Also, if you will be fishing the Challenge, but making your own cabin arrangements let us know so we can register your team. During the event daily results need to be reported to tournament headquarters. We will coordinate a means of doing this for all teams. There is a $25 registration fee for each team, payable by the chapter, and we will be providing team tee shirts for the event.

Poolside Demo

Hilton Garden Inn - Maple Grove

Don’t miss this month’s Pool Side Lure Demo by Brett Erickson of Thorne Brothers, May 15th:  7:00 â€“ 8:30 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn, 6350 Vinewood Lane (Just off Bass Lake RD and I-494) instead of normal monthly meeting.

Watch Brett Erickson demonstrate how to present lures that are new to the muskie world, as well as some old favorites.  See topwaters, jerkbaits, bucktails, spinnerbaits, gliders, crankbaits, swim baits, and others that shake, rattle and troll!  You will get tips on enticing that monster muskie to eat your bait and make your year more successful!

Brett has been fishing since the age of 4 and has fished all the Midwest. He is also a successful tournament angler where he's fished in muskie tournaments across the Midwest as well. Approximately 33 years ago Brett began fishing muskies in Canada and now spends most of his time there are either Muskie Bay Resort or Moosehorn Lodge. Brett is on the Pro Staff with Ranger Boats and Evinrude Outboards.

We thank the Maple Grove Garden Inn Hilton for the use of their pool which should allow members to circle the pool to clearly see the lures.

June Picnic & Lure Swap

Remember, the June Meeting will be our Annual  Picnic and Lure Swap. Bring your lures!!!! It will be held at the same place it has the last couple of years,

Riverfront Park on East River Road in Fridley, see the map below ¼ mile south of 694 on East River Road. Picnic starts at 6pm. This is a great time to get together, eat a bit, swap some lures and also swap information on the early season Muskie Fishing. Bring all of your favorite, and not so favorite lures and other tackle for swapping with other members, so start looking at those baits now.

Hot dogs, Chips, Salads, Pop and Beer are provided, doesn’t get much better than that!?! We should have our casting contest again and a Beans game set up for people. See ya there!!!

Muskie Camp Lake Vermillion

July 18 - 21, HooDoo Point Campground
Join fellow North Metro members for a camping and fishing outing on beautiful Lake Vermillion. “Big Fish” contest Saturday, $5 entry fee. Attempt to take home the Traveling Trophy for the most inches of Muskie caught Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Socialize and share information on tips and tactics around the campfire.

If you know you are going to attend this event and want me to reserve a site in your name, please contact Pat Garaghty at 763-772-2122 or via e-mail at Grog@midco.net. Muskie Stocking

In conjunction with the Hugh C. Becker Foundation’s grant of $5,000 and NMMI matching $3,000; we plan to stock 439 Yearlings averaging 14" into White Bear Lake and 176 into Forest Lake in May to make up for the DNR non-stocking shortfall in 2012.  When we know the scheduled date and time, we will post it in advance on our website in case anyone wants to come out and watch. Your dedication has helped stock muskies.

Not Our First Rodeo
Red Wing Lodge
August 10-17, 2013

It’s easy to include yourself in a big-time Canadian fishing trip, join an outing that has successfully taken place for years at a base camp that just works great for muskie hunters.  For either that first Canadian trip or for an extra trip for the Canadian veteran, Red Wing Lodge on Sabaskong Bay is an amazing destination. Red Wing Lodge is the eight-time Muskies Inc. Chapter Challunge Headquarters, in 1983, ’86, ’93, ’97, ’03, ’04, and again in 2011 and 2012, and has logged in over 12,000 catch and release muskies.

When hunting muskies on Canadian Shield water, surprises at base camp can cut down on valuable fishing time. Red Wing Lodge offers a resort base that has been family owned and operated for more than 45 years and is clean and comfortable where everything works. The Bartlett family has hosted Muskies Inc. outings for years with personal and friendly service, so they understand what muskie people need and like. Last summer 25 fishermen enjoyed this trip, open to Muskies Inc. chapter members and their guests. Check out the muskie information, including the Lodge Hall of Fame, as well as the first live cam in Morson, at www.redwinglodge.net.

Cost per person in housekeeping cabins will be $325 (US Funds) for 2013, which breaks down to just $46.43 per day for big-time Canadian muskie fishing.

Included in the full value of the 2013 Muskie Inc. trip:

  • Free Dockage ($72 value), Free Launch (both ways, $25 value)
  • Free Dinner one night, courtesy of the Bartletts
  • One Free Trip, given away in drawing, courtesy of the Bartletts
  • Free Wireless Internet Service throughout the Resort
  • Free Daily Bag of Ice; door prizes
Reservations require a $50 non-refundable deposit, made out to Red Wing Lodge. Deposits officially confirm reservation holds. First come, first served. Deposit funds are used to purchase materials for cabin improvements, for e.g., during last winter the Bartletts completed the installation of A/C units in all cabins.

North Metro Muskie League

That sunshine is getting warm. Can muskie fishing be far away? I hope that you are looking forward to fishing in the North Metro Muskie league this summer. It is a great way to get out fishing and meet other North Metro members. Best of all, it is free!

At the suggestion of last year’s participants, I made some changes for 2013. We added Rush Lake to our lineup. We also added a couple Saturday morning events. The Saturday morning events are scheduled for early morning so that we can fish at the peak time of sunrise and avoid the usual weekend heavy boat traffic of metro lakes. We will also try to have PIT tag readers available for some league events. Bald Eagle, White Bear, and Minnetonka have muskies with PIT tags.

Tuesday June 5th Bald Eagle Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday June 12th Rush Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Saturday June 15th Bald Eagle Lake 5:00am – 10:00am
Tuesday June 18th Forest Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday June 25th White Bear Lake 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday July 2nd Lake Minnetonka 5:00pm – 9:30pm
Tuesday August 6th White Bear Lake 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Tuesday August 13th Lake Independence 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Tuesday August 20th Forest Lake 5:00pm – 9:00pm
Saturday August 24th White Bear Lake 5:30am – 10:30am
Tuesday August 27th Bald eagle Lake 5:00pm – 9:00pm

Scoring

4 points for a 30" muskie and 1 point for each inch over 30". This is the same as the member’s only contest.

This is an “on your honor” league. We do not rely on witnesses, photographs, or any other sort of verification of the fish caught. It is up to you to accurately measure and report your fish.

3 points per event fished.
2 points will be awarded for fishing with a new partner during each league event.
4 points if your partner is a new member in 2013.

Partners do not have to be members. Each partner only counts one time during the league. You may only count one partner per event. You may fish 3 people in a boat.

To be awarded points, you will need to report the events fished within 1 week. You must E-Mail me at Kriskokoran@gmail.comThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . I will need to know your name, the lake fished, and your partner’s name. Please let me know if your partner is new member in 2013 or if they are a non-member.

No ties will be allowed. The winner of a tie will be determined by the League Director using the following criteria; most fish points, biggest fish, biggest fish caught first, most partner points, and finally a coin toss. I will post the standings on the www.nmmuskies.com message board.

Prizes
• 1st place Chapter jacket
• 2nd place Chapter hooded sweatshirt
• 3rd Place Chapter T-shirt
• 4th Place Chapter hat
• 5th Place Chapter hat

Please contact me if you have any questions. Good luck to all this coming season.

2013 Rod Building Class Update

Well, another rod building class went into the books on April 27th and once again Gary Wicks put on a great class. I would also like to say a special thanks to Ray Connoy for his help and assistance during the class. As usual, we built a bunch of great rods and the new 9 footers look like they are going to be the go-to rod in quite a few boats this year.

The Coon Rapids VFW graciously donated the dining room area for us to hold the class and it worked out well. It’s hard to beat donated space that’s only 20 feet from a fully stocked bar with Heggie’s Pizzas for lunch. There were 11 members and non-members in the class this year with a continuation of the theme from last year of the younger members showing the old boyz how to build a nice (and colorful) rod.

Please keep in mind that Gary will let you come to his shop to build a rod. So if you missed the class this year and want to build a rod, please give Gary a call at 763-427-0631 and he will be glad to work with you to schedule a time. You can also visit his web site at www.garyscustomrodnreel.com.
