With the ultimate luxury combined with the added fuel economy in comparison to a standard monohull together with all of the benefits that a catamaran hull can offer, more buyers are checking the power cat idea out and seeing that the numbers add up. The boats are also stunning.

With the Voyager 345 selling like hot cakes followed by the Voyager 385 in the UK people are slow to recognise the brand outside the UK, but I am sure that will not be for long. These yachts are well built offer great performance and comfort.

European VAT should you pay it? Get around it, get under it, or get over it?
Lets face it, nobody likes paying tax and European VAT, TVA, IVA whatever they like to call it, is the worst tax of the lot and sends shivers down most boat owners spines.

If you have a VAT invoice you can smugly take comfort in the fact that you are in the minority!

Paying 21% which is the going rate in many EU countries hurts and the poor old Spanish have to stump up a further 12% Matriculation tax, which cannot be good for Spanish marine business, but that's another story!

There are very few boats believe it or not that have VAT paid status for various reasons. Sure there have been many exotic ideas to get out of paying it like Cross Border Leasing schemes exploiting legal loop holes, hopping in and out of the EU on a six monthly basis, or even putting your precious yacht in charter management or set up a fictitious charter company. Either way many owners were just cruising for a bruising.
In these times when many governments tax collectors are looking to rake in revenue, it is easy for them to look towards wealthy yacht owner's being an easy target.

Many yachts have been poodling about the Med for years without running into the authorities, but time could be running out with nowhere to hide. Loopholes have been closed, the tax offices are getting more organised and efficient at taking our money.

If you have not paid it for any reason it is probably taking the enjoyment out of yacht ownership.  Looking over your shoulder all the time, waiting for that inevitable knock on your hull from a customs launch, Duane or Port Police, the ad from the UK Government say's "tax doesn't need to be taxing", yeah, right!

There are so many grey areas that most people do not know what to do or how or where to pay it even if they want to.
If you are trying to sell your boat and VAT is not paid and the owner wants to keep it in the EU it will be harder to sell.

My advice is pay it, you will feel much better about boat ownership and you should get it back when you sell it!

We have written to the EU VAT Department to clarify things directly, but all we get is a standard response referring to sections on their website irrelevant to the questions we have asked.
Everyone we have spoken to so-far at the office is unclear themselves what the situation is.

We will keep you posted!
