The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo invites you to Celebrate Free Comic Book Day at Quimby’s Bookstore with them! This celebration will feature readings by local comics creators, Jo Dery (Quietly Sure – Like the Keeper of a Great Secret, Little Otsu), Carter Lodwick (My Darling, Old Master), and Corinne Mucha (My Every Single Thought, Is It The Future Yet? (a Quimby’s exclusive), Freshmen, Zest Books). All three readers will be exhibiting at CAKE 2013. Quimby’s will feature free comics throughout the day, as well as free comics and refreshments during the event.

Pete Jordan, author of Dishwasher, tells the story of his love affair with Amsterdam, the city of bikes, all the while unfolding an unknown history of the city’s cycling, from the craze of the 1890s, through the Nazi occupation, to the bike-centric culture adored by the world today.

Tues, May 7th, 7pm
True rock 'n' roll secrets revealed! DC singer Ian Svenonius communes with dead musicians (Brian Jones! Hendrix! And so on! All strangely articulate!) to create a how-to guide for making a successful rock 'n' roll group. The author, who is most well-known as the singer of The Nation of Ulysses and The Make-Up, two of the most popular bands to emerge from DC’s Dischord record label, is also the author of The Psychic Soviet and the host of Vice's Soft Focus series. And! Don’t miss the official after party at The Owl (NOT QUIMBY'S) where Ian and Calvin Johnson will be DJing at The Owl from 10-4. Ian will have a mixtape soundtrack for the book for sale at the after party. These will be a numbered edition of 100 tapes with silk screened covers. 2521 N. Milwaukee.

In the week following March’s Chicago Zine Fest, 13 high school students participated in a series of talks and workshops with exciting self-publishing artists from the greater Chicagoland area. Now here’s their chance to present and read from their self-published works inspired by what they learned during the series, that include essays, poems, comics and stories. Quimby’s is proud to support the next era of self-publishers. Featuring tales of: eggplants, deep fears, deep loves, White Castle, radio reception and more!

Sat, May 25th, 7pm

Maker, illustrator, and cartoonist Annie Mok reads recent comics from Frank Santoro's online magazine 'Comics Workbook' and elsewhere, touching on themes of childhood trauma, resilience, sexuality, and trans identity. She is the artist behind the Jim Henson bio comic 'Stitching Together,' and 'Annie Mok Draws James Joyce' and all sorts of past and soon-to-be-published comics. Annie will be joined by Sam Sharpe, who has self-published over a dozen comics with such names as Koolosaurus, Poop, Return Me to the Sea and These Yams Are Delicious.

Thurs, May 30th, 7pm
The monthly focus on lady comics and friends of lady comics artists returns. Come hear comics creators speak about their work, their process, their plans, and whatever else they want to share with us. This month, both artists are Chicago-based. Sarah Morton is currently working on volume 3 of Seasonal, a graphic novel based on the book by Bobbi Parry. Tyrell Cannon does the comic Gary about a true-crime ispired serial killer.

Doris #30 Highest Standard of Living $3.50 - Doris continues to be a zine-form stronghold of bold and astute essays on dealing, healing and the art of living. This issue is a big deal: about half of it is a critique on underdeveloped accountability processes and what can be envisioned in their stead, including an interview with members of Support N.Y. Community formation and fluctuation seems to be the other strong thread running throughout - tour comics, bee hives, study groups and the way the term itself can break down or expand. Great issue.

St Owls Bay Wet Swords by Simon Hanselmann (Floating World Comics) $5.00 – Hanselmann’s team of bitchy fuckups possesses such a well-unbalanced chemistry of neurosis, aggression and nonchalance you just can’t turn away. Camp drugs and night terriers…I’d expect no less from a trip with these clowns. -EF
