Antipodes Festival, Monet, Costumes and more

Welcome to the April-May 2013 edition of Humanities 21 eNews.

This month in Melbourne offers a wide range of exciting events for you to explore - there are Greek History & Culture seminars as part of the Greek Community of Melbourne's Antipodes Festival; the NGV's 'Monet's Garden' opens, featuring a symposium in which you can hear renowned international speakers address key themes of the exhibition; or you could attend a lecture or do a short course in the Art & History of Garden Design. Another major exhibition with a number of associated talks is ACMI's Hollywood Costume which explores the central role costume design plays in cinema storytelling. Long term exhibitions are also worth remembering, such as The Classics and Archaeology Collection at The Ian Potter Museum in the University of Melbourne, or the State Library of Victoria's 'Changing Faces of Victoria'.

Our events calendar is growing every week, and this newsletter is only a small selection of What's On for us humanities enthusiasts, so take a look and you might find something exciting you had no idea was out there!

Jane Utting, Executive Director, Humanities 21.

Arts at WORK

Monthly Profile: Sue Hamilton

Organisation: Humanities 21
Industry: Public service & not-for-profit social enterprise.
Background: Classics degree (Oxford)

Sue Hamilton's classics degree from Oxford provided ideal training for public service, ultimately taking her to the role of CEO of the State Library of Victoria, as well as managing the federal health budget. She learned to write "from some of the best writers who ever lived" which was an asset to the public service; a paper-based world where ministers need bits of paper that they can read and understand in a car, a lift, and in parliament.

For more on how Sue's humanities study was the cornerstone to her remarkable career,  go to the 'Arts at Work' page on our website.
