Sleep tips

Today college students are not getting enough sleep.  Sleep isn’t a luxury, but a necessity.  Research indicates that lack of sleep correlates to academic performance, and health problems. Here are some tips you can implement in your life.
  • Keep a regular sleep/wake schedule
  • Enjoy a 20-30 minute nap BEFORE 2 p.m.
  • DON’T study in bed
  • Get 7-9 hours of sleep
  • Make a “to-do” list before bed
  • Do not work out at night
  • Avoid meals after 8 p.m.
  • Avoid “sleep stealers” (caffeine, alcohol, drugs, nicotine etc.)
Contact the Student Health Center for more information.

Play detailing life of Frida Kahlo comes to OSU

“Frida, un Retablo,” a play detailing the creative life of acclaimed Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, will be presented at Oregon State University on Friday, April 26, beginning at 7 p.m.

The performance will take place in the Lab Theater of Withycombe Hall, 30th and Campus Way, Corvallis. Admission is free. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.; latecomers will not be seated.

Written by Dañel Malán of Portland’s Teatro Milagro (Miracle Theater), the play follows the iconic Kahlo through her life as a visual artist, while intertwining the story of the streetcar accident that left her crippled and her torrid relationship with the muralist Diego Rivera.

The play was initially performed by Teatro Milagro in 2007, and was brought back by the group due to popular demand.

In this newest rendition, three Fridas take the stage: Tricia Castañeda-González as Frida, Dañel Malán as the spirit of Frida, and Oregon State alumnus Ajai Terrazas-Tripathi as Old Frida. Daniel Moreno plays Diego Rivera, and the play is directed by Gabriela Portuguez.

The performance is sponsored by Teatro Milagro in conjunction with OSU’s Center for Latin@ Studies and Oregon State University Theatre.

Austin Hall update

The rock column installation (vibration) is complete!

The next phase involves the installation of a large tower crane. Jefferson Way will be closed April 23-25 during construction hours to deliver and assemble the tower crane.

The tower crane boom will be an impressive 196 feet long and will swing over other buildings in the area (including Hawley-Buxton). The crane will not lift or carry any objects outside of the construction fencing.

NOTE: The crane is designed to “windmill” when not in use and will weathervane in the wind to reduce stress on the tower. i.e. the boom will be moving around even when no operator is present.

Power shutdowns

Pacific Power & Light will be updating portions of the power grid on the OSU Corvallis campus over the coming weeks, necessitating some weekend power shutdowns to a number of buildings on campus. The replacement of these older, lesser load switches is part of a plan to provider greater power system stability on campus.
