SPECIAL EDITION: EXCUSE ME... MISS
Last week, Brooklyn Movement Center kicked off our anti-street harassment work by co-sponsoring International Anti-Street Harassment Week. As part of this public demand for women's safety in the street, we held a rap session with a small group of women in Bed-Stuy where we discussed this issue, how it impacts our lives and what we can do about it. We also held a chalk party in Fulton Park, a space commonly considered unsafe by women in the neighborhood. We were interviewed by reporters, and wrote a provocative blog post. All in all, a superb week for speaking out against harassment. Check out the pictures! Watch the interview! Read the blogs! Then, JOIN THE MOVEMENT!

We were on TV!

Marly & Anthonine sat down with David Ushery of WNBC to discuss our street harassment work in Brooklyn! Click here to watch!  Not only did WNBC show us love, Brooklyn Movement Center's work on street harassment this past week was also featured in DNA InfoBrooklyn Ink, the Daily News, and Gothamist.

Meet Charla Harlow of The Harlow Project

Charla was with us at the Chalk Party in Fulton Park on April 8, collecting video stories of street harassment from men and women. On May 18th, she'll be on the road again with BMC at SOS Crown Heights' Kingston Ave Festival from 12 pm-5pm, collecting more of your stories. Meet us on Kingston Avenue from Pacific St. to St. Marks Pl. if you're interested in sharing.

Got Tools?

We've also created a Street Harassment toolkit where we've assembled articles, videos and other resources pertaining to harassment of women and women of color in particular. It's a work in progress so let us know what you think! Click here to check it out!

Join the Committee!

International Anti-Street Harassment Week was just the beginning of Brooklyn Movement Center's work to make Bed-Stuy safer for women. This summer, we plan to hold actions in the neighborhood, continue to raise awareness on this issue and start dialogue about how men and women interact in the streets.

We've got tons of ideas: more chalk parties! pop-up teach-ins! rallies! rap sessions! performance art! capturing your stories! male ally work! handing out "not interested" cards!

Join BMC's Anti-Street Harassment Working Group and help lead the movement against street harassment in Bed-Stuy. Be a part of reclaiming our streets!
