Anti-Trafficking Efforts in Ohio: End Demand Act
Last April, a report by the Research and Analysis Sub-Committee of the Ohio Human Trafficking Commission discussing sex trafficking in Ohio, discovered that adults who were being commercially sexually exploited were more likely to be recruited by a male who first presented himself as a boyfriend and later became threatening and found that individuals who were commercially sexually exploited before the age of 18 were more likely to suffer child abuse and neglect; to have a close family member involved in the sex trade; to suffer depression; to have been raped; to run away from home; to have an older boyfriend; to have difficulty in school; to have interacted with the police; to have spent time in juvenile detention; and to have been in the proximity of those who sold or bought others for sex. Only 19% were connected with child protective services in Ohio.
Out of these findings, the report highlighted the following recommendations: identify child trafficking as child abuse; establish a better response to Ohio youth who run away; engage schools in the fight against child sex trafficking; establish protocols that identify victims and protocols that divert high risk youth; reduce the stigma related to youth victims; invest in responding to adult sex trafficking.

Local Activist Spotlight:
Heart Beats Slavery
Emily Kimball is the founder and producer of the upcoming documentary, Heart Beats Slavery, a film about how everyday ordinary people and organizations are combating human trafficking in their communities. The documentary will focus on showing what other Americans are doing to fight human trafficking, what modern day slavery is and looks like, and the prevalence of sex trafficking in the United States. The film will shoot in multiple cities throughout Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky, following how different organizations and individuals are combating human trafficking in their communities and what can still be done to raise awareness, educate, and raise funds to help end human trafficking.
Emily has a vision to inspire the general public to take action and show individuals how they can help, by watching and learning from the individuals and organizations featured in her film. A high quantity of individuals believe human trafficking is too big of a problem for one person to stop, but the film will show how individuals break down that barrier and contribute to the fight in the most unique ways, from participating in a 27 hour triathlon for the 27 million victims of human trafficking, to using their tattoo talents to cover up sex trafficking victim’s tattoos. Emily used her networking skills, outgoing personality, and her ability to build quick rapport with others to make her vision into a film. What skills can you use to help the fight against human trafficking?
You can follow the progress of Heart Beats Slavery on Facebook and Twitter and remember to share it with your family, friends, and co-workers, because what you do can make a difference!
